I find it rude if someone doesn't smile back, especially in a customer service environment.

If I am spending my money somewhere that is taking it, the least they could do is take my money with a smile.

I find I am doing more and more shopping online because the caliber of people that I meet face to face is constantly spiraling downwards. I try to be pleasant and courteous, but I'd rather shop online now.

A smile says so much about a person, especially when it's natural and not just as part of their "job" to smile. When I smile at someone and they look back at me with a straight face, and no expression...I take it they're not happy with themselves in some way or just bitter.

Seriously, it doesn't take a lot to smile. It can make someone's day.

I work at a west Hollywood resturant,Barneys Beanery,A smile goes a long way for me.I've worked there for 17 years and let's just say I'm not one of the cute 20 year olds that greets the table. But I always smile and make eye contact and i see that people ,most of the time ,respond to this greeting. In this society and hurried times,a little bit of kindness in your smile can make someones day. It's like a little hug from a stranger and reminds us that we are all in need of kindness to and from eachother, back to the old days when we didn't have to be so afraid of eachother.

I do feel that smiling, especially when in a form of service industry, is a courtesy. When I come up on a person with a poor dispossition I dont really feel that I want to do it. It is bothersome, why dont people like to smile any more? Is there nothing to be happy about? F it, smile, it could always be worse.

smiles can be contagious, when that happiness good things certainly can come from that. At least this is what I hope happens when I smile, I hope to pass them on. However, some people just don't like to smile, even though they choose to use more muscles to frown, then smile. Besides, I prefer to smile, because, less wrinkles......... ha ha

Sure, of course I like it, and who wouldn't. Especially in a service economy like ours in the US, this is one of the main problems we have, that the person behind the counter doesn't show appreciation for the customer's business. The customer is always right, I know I'm old-fashioned but it's true or it should be.

There, I'm coming down off my soapbox now!
