My buddy's girlfriend's 16 year old daughter wants to use tampons, but her mother is against it. The mother wants her to use toilet paper instead. When i heard about this, i was wondering what the #ell was the mother thinking! This is not a proper feminine hygeine practice to teach her daughter! Using tampons is more sanitary. Personally i think the mother usually does not deal with a full deck most of the time anyways. Right now both the mother, and the boyfriend (my buddy) are unemployed. Money is tight, and i cannot see how they can eat using the social security money they recieve each month for their other child who is 10 years old that has had a heart transplant. Since the parents can seem to hold jobs i dont like to help them out anymore. They need a reality check, but i thought of secretly buying a 80 count box of tampons for the daughter. Should I?

Poor girl!! I bet that she could get some tampons from the school nurse, but you are very nice to offer to buy some for her. Using toilet paper is not only ineffective, it is uncomfortable. Her mother knows this and that sucks that she is that selfish that she would have her daughter suffer.

Let her go. Does she have a cell phone? All teens that drive should have a cell phone, in case of an accident or emergency. Have her call you when she gets there. She's 16. I was running off with 17 year old boys that could drive when I was 14. I was fine, as long as my mom knew who I was with, and when I'd be back.

Tampons can be very uncomfortable. I suggest talking to her about which she prefers and then going out and buying a ton of medium pads with wings (the thin ones... you can quite a few for under $10) or tampons. And no, toilet paper is neither sanitary nor will it clean up the blood properly. I can't imagine how uncomfortable it is too...

Do the girl a favour. It isn't her fault her parents are morons...

Rather than buying her tampons why not buy her something more useful?

A menstrual cup will cost around the same price as that box of tampons, the difference is a menstrual cup will last her up to 10 years, menstrual cups are far safer and more hygienic than tampons, they are more environmentally friendly, cheaper, more discrete so she would not have to hide it from her mother, and more convenient – can be left in for up to 12 hours, worn for sports like swimming, worn at night and worn before her period starts. She'd also be far happier with menstrual cups too given how superior they are over tampons or pads.

Menstrual cups have money back guarantees from between three months to a year so if she does not like them or her mother objects then you can send it back for a full refund of your money.

Toilet paper is not unhygienic, tampons however certainly are and if her family are as poor as you imply it hardly helps to buy her one box of overpriced tampons when you can buy her something so cheap that will keep her healthy and with sanitary products for up to ten years!

Oh dear god NO! If you tried to do that with my daughter I'd beat you black and blue! Reality check - apart from having no right to but in on how other people raise their children, you may be willing to buy one measly box of tampons but will you be willing to keep buying them or paying for the bills when she gets an infection or worse?! What the hell are YOU thinking, do you have any idea on female hygeine yourself!!?!

Sit down with the mother and let her know of the concern you have for the girl and proper feminine hygeine. Let her know that you will buy the girl some pads (NOT tampons), just to help them out. If the mother agrees to this - then buy the pads, if not - then please do NOT go against the wishes of the mother and do NOT sneak anything to the girl. You do NOT want to anger the mother!
If the girl wants to use tampons then she needs to make her own money to buy them - let her make up her own mind on what she wants to use.

Actually using toilet paper is better feminine hygiene than using tampons.

Tampons are one of the most harmful and unhygienic menstrual options available – preventing vaginal self-cleaning/defence functions and giving bacteria a warm, moist, blood filled material wad to multiply within – thus why tampons are linked with TSS, vaginal infections and various other vaginal/menstrual/reproductive health problems, that simply add to the cost when it comes to treatment.

Tampons are also expensive, in fact they also happen to be the most expensive menstrual option available – a 100 count box is around $24.05 and will last around 4 months, compared to cloth pads that cost $16 and will last around 2 years or cloth pads that cost as much as the fabric, or compared to a menstrual cup that costs around $35 for 10 years! Or toilet paper that is in abundant supply and very cheap, or even free-flow [bleeding without menstrual products, layering clothing to catch blood, or learning to recognise when bleeding to empty out into the toilet] which is free and still safer and more hygienic than tampons!

In short – NO – tampons are unhygienic and unsafe; it is also far from your place to be going against a mothers wishes, particularly with something so personal and something as important as sanitary protection.

Yes! That mother is out of her freaking mind. I never ever ever understood this. When moms won't let there daughters use a tampon. Give me a freaking break. It's not like they are doing something wrong or dirty. I think the mom should have to use toilet paper. See how that winner likes it.

Not only should you buy them for her (and by the way...the planet could use more people like you!), I think you should take a trip to her school and inform the counselors there what kind of household this poor girl lives in.
