I would say it's fairly easy to fall into conversation with and meet people in NY, however, you have to be *extremely* cautious about becoming friends with a total stranger -- or even casual acquaintance.

It's easiest to make friends if you join lots of groups (social, political, religious) and take classes and network through your job. Night clubs, bars, etc. really aren't good places to meet decent people.

Extreme common sense should prevail -- like only meeting peopke and doing things in extremely populated settings until you have a better sense of the person or persons (and I'm talking at least 4 or 5 or more public meetings) and have a chance to meet their friends, coworkers or better yet, family members.

There are a LOT of really deranged people out there who seem okay on the surface. Not to mention crooks and con artists. It's easier for them to blend in and hide in a big city.

I've lived in various cities and to tell you to the truth, it's really no different than any other place. There are more people, yes. But don't let that fool you into thinking it'll make a difference.

In the end, it depends how social you are and where you go to meet people. It might depend on WHO you know before you get there, too. I always used to meet people THROUGH other people.

If you hear other people say, "use common sense" -- I think that's a big, "duh!" -- Are you really going to go up to some homeless person and start talking to them and asking them out for a drink? Get real.

It's your trust in humanity. There are crazy people every where, so don't listen to that. NYC has a lower crime rate than Phoenix, Memphis, Detroit and other major cities.

In the end, it's math. The probability of you meeting people is HIGH. But that's directly proportional to how social you are and how NICE you are. I believe you attract people you want into your life... be yourself, you'll find genuine people just like you!

In NYC, there are so many different people coming & going, but if you meet people in common areas, like the library, school, church, etc., then you probably can make friends.
