Failure to see their own weeknesses and short falls and chose to look at others' mistakes...Jesus Clearly warned of this and said "Hypocrites, take the plank out of your own eyes before removing the speck from your brothers' eyes."

God bless you and protect you from such a terrible sin, guiding you to all holiness and humility in His loving presance.

self righteousness is when you try to be so "good", that you end up being bad.....

pride, misinterpretation of the Bible, jealousy, yada yada can cause self righteousness

generally it's when you think you take the "we are the righteousness of God" or "be Holy" aspect too far. You start becoming kinda like the Pharesis (sorry for spelling) and try to be recognized for your righteousness, or you make your righteousness a burden on other people. Some interpret this as doing God's job, like judging people. Others think of it as you feeling "you can do no wrong", which you are physically able to do (can) but should not (not allowed!).

etc etc etc. but take this in the context. someone telling you what a sin is is not self righteousness

We live in a very self oriented time...Too many people think "it's all about me" and I dont think it has anything to do with religion, though some self absorbed people claim a religion. There are just as many non-religious who are "self righteous" as it is displayed here in every thread proclaiming the "ignorance" of the religious.

We get wrapped up in "self" because society allows for it. "Life Liberty and THE PERSUIT OF HAPPINESS" might have triggered the biggest explosion of "me-ism" ever.. I have the RIGHT to be happy, and I have the RIGHT to persue it and anything you do different than me, invades my RIGHT" so therefore, we have a LOT of SELF right, with no regard to someone elses. Our society embraces pride, self love, and self forgiveness. Some people actually BELIEVE you cant love God or someone else UNTIL you love yourself! Nothing kills self controll, humility, humbleness and compassion more than "self love"

Pride. A person wants to believe they are some how better than others. It's human nature. But pride comes before a fall.

They think they are a very good person that just occassionally makes mistakes or are mistaken. Therefore if a person is so " good" they can't possibly make a bad decision by meaning to make that choice.

The belief they are right, everyone else is wrong, and everyone should believe the way they do, because only then will those who are wrong become intelligent, worthy human beings.

In my opinion.... Low self-esteem, Doubting themselves, and therefore needing a "crutch" to hang on to. And yeah...they feel the need to preach this to others.

ANNOYING.
