I was just wondering, I hear the term in here so much. To me, it's either married, living together, engaged with plans made, or together with a child/children.

Taken for me is when you are 'off the market.' In other words, you are in an exclusive relationship. Meaning the two of you are a couple and will not see anyone else. This includes what you listed above plus boyfriend/girlfriends (or bf/bf or gf/gf) who may not live together but date only each other.

In other words, when you are exclusive to the person you're with, you are taken. Up until then you are able to date other people without 'cheating' and therefore I wouldn't consider that 'taken' but dating.

It depends on the mindset of the people involved in the "relationship". It could any/all of the above. In my case, I don't live with my bf or am not engaged with plans made and have no children with him or from another relationship (same for him), but I and he are definitely "taken". He loves me and I love him and I dare anyone to try and refute that fact.
