1 red bull should be enough, but it has B vitamins and stuff, where coffee is just caffeine - no vitamins.
The energy drinks shouldn't be too bad because the B vitamins are water soluble so excess of those flush out of the body. It just sounds like he is pushing himself too far and trying to keep up, coffee won't help that !

They do work for a certain amount of time. When I first started running before work, I was EXHAUSTED by the middle of the day. I drank a red bull with lunch, and I was fine until I got home. Then I crashed.

Well, some stuff that they put in energy drinks can sometimes be slightly addictive. He has probably drank so much that he has hooked himself on it.

Some of them taste pretty good, but they have way to much sugar in them, and maybe he doesn't like the taste of coffee.

because energy drinks are basically a legal form of speed, they'll help you wake up to start your day but they end with you crashing half an hour later.
