Here is the situiation. I am in the military, and I have started smoking heavily since I been in the army. Since I started, I have been trying to quit. I have tried multiple times, like cold turkey, the nicorette gum (that tastes horrible and aint worth a thing. I mean I have cut back a lot. I use to smoke a full pack a day, now I only smoke about 10 per day since september. Everything that I tried, never seems to work, because something will really upset me, and all I want to get the stress off my shoulders, is a cigarette. I never did think that it would be this hard. But it sure did full me. I really want to quit. And where I am at now, it is even harder to quit, because it is that much more stressful. And please dont tell me to get out of the service, because I really love my job and I am proud to be protecting my country.

I smoked for 11 years VERY heavily (Marb Reds). I have been without a cigarette for 3 ½ months now. After the first 48 hours you will feel really light headed. The reason you feel so light headed is because your body isn’t used to getting that much oxygen… So that is really a good thing. Using the commit lozenge is very helpful if you feel nicotine withdrawals.
The easiest way to quit and the ONLY way that worked for me was to use commit for 2 months… about 8 lozenges a day. I took the 4 MG ones. That is the strongest dosage available over-the-counter. Get the 4 MG ones if you smoke your first cigarette within a half an hour of waking up. They also offer a 2 MG Commit Lozenge but it seems like the 2 MG ones break up too easily in your mouth. The 4 MG ones stay solid in your mouth. I prefer the Mint ones. If you have a sweet tooth then go for cherry. Be carefull tho. Somtimes they will leave white powder on you mouth that could be embarissing if you're not paying attention. Just lick your lips from time to time. At first the lozenge will burn your mouth but… you will cry for joy when you feel the nicotine going through your body and killing your urge to smoke.
WARNING!!!! When you decide to quit. Be prepared. You will go through phases where you want to smoke severely. You will become VERY irritated.
How to get through the Addiction Fits.
Some times something you will be doing will trigger the natural smoker reaction you have to get up and go outside and smoke…. Or maybe you smoke inside…. But the key to staying off of cigarettes is to simply survive without one through these nicotine fits. When you have a nicotine fit simply DON’T give in. Jogging helped a lot for me. Pop a lozenge in and fight the urge. Make sure to throw away all of your cigarettes. There were times I KNOW I would have given in if they would have been on hand. Just know that the Nicotine fit will pass over time. Sometimes it feels like they wont but they will ALL eventually pass. It is allong the same lines as when you have an itch. if you don't scrath it it will irritate you for quite a while, but it will eventually pass.
Another symptom you will start to feel is relief. When I used to smoke all I could think about was dying. When you quit you will feel alive again and all of your nervous habits will relax. You will feel human again and won't be full of fear!
To be honest when I look in the mirror now I look so much better. I can tell that i look better by the way the girl react to me.
Another thing that helps is to tell your family. They can help support you. I know my girlfriend supports me 1000%.
My throat used to be constantly in pain from smoking. It almost felt like I had throat cancer and my breath smelt so bad I constantly had to chew gum. ... Now 2 months later my throat feels completly healed and my breath is totally healed as well.
Take it from me. 2 months ago I literally couldn’t walk up 2 flights of stairs without being so out of breath I had to breathe through my mouth. 2 months later….. 0 cigarettes; and I feel so much better. Jogging has raised my cardio back up to where I feel human again….
Be prepared tho….. You will get hungry again. Try switching to diet rite soda, and snack on veggies, take a multi-vitamin too. You are going to feel TIRED. For one, your body is going to go into a healing cycle for probably the next full year and without all the nicotine in your body lifting your energy levels you will want to sleep more…. But hey that is a good thing.
Please have fun quitting. It will probably be the hardest thing you will every face in your lifetime…. But know there are others out there that are standing with you…. I am for one.
I used to be affraid that if I quit, somehow they would outlaw cigarettes and I wouldn't get to have one again if I ever "change my mind" . Don't worry about that. The only thing in life that is irriplacable is your body. I started smoking when I was way too young. 14!~ Please stay positive.
Oh and one more thing. I haven't gone to church in years but I found that praying and begging to God did help.

I just want to tell you that I for one totally understand and feel yoru frustration. I hope you are taking something to help you quit??? I would recommend the patch if you don't already have something. There was a whole program on Oprah yesterday about how bad smoking is to quit. They actually said smoking was worse than a heroin addict. I have been struggled with this addiction for such a long time, I quit, went back, etc...I recently thought I could control it and just have a few. The truth is once the nicotine is in your system your brain/body keeps wanting more. The longer you are away from them the less you will crave one. I work for family and 2 other girls here smoke all day long. I go home everyday smelling of it, and that makes it hard too. But, it's a life change, they are running your life. Don't let the ciggs control you, and you can't control it on your own. You need support, you and your bf should be helping each other. They also said it is very effective to use the tools to help you quit. I wish you much luck and know how frustrating and mind boggling it can be. But, it is a change for the better, you will live longer and healthier. You have so much time now to change your whole life. This is one of the hardest things you will ever do, but when its all said and done you will be so thankful and feel so empowered. Just think what you can do once you've conquered this!!! I seriously wish you all the best of luck and know how hard it is, just try and take it one day at a time. If it helps you think one hour at a time, you got through this hour now the next. I promise it gets easier the longer you have been away from it. The hardest part are the first few weeks:)

I would recommend you to get a copy of "The easy way to stop smoking" written by Allen Carr. I stopped three weeks ago after reading his book, and if you are looking for an easy way, this is the way.
I had tried to stop twice before using nicotine chewing gum, but the craving for cigarettes never went away. Now I laugh thinking that I was replacing nicotine in cigarettes with nicotine through chewing gum. The first thing you have to realize as a smoker is that you are a drug addict - I know it sounds quite horrible, but it is true. You are a drug addict addicted to nicotine. Obviously you will not stop craving cigarettes when you are chewing nicotine gum. Also realize that a cigarette doesn't relive stress! When you smoke a cigarette you get a certain amount of nicotine, after a while, app 45 minutes, the level of nicotine in your system decreases, because you are addicted to nicotine you will want another cigarette to "relieve the stress". As Allen Carr says, it is like wearing tight shoes, to feel relieve when you take them off. If you weren't addicted to the nicotine, you wouldn't relieve stress by smoking a cigarette.
Anyway, get a copy of his book, it makes stopping smoking really easy. I have smoked for 15 years (I am 30 years old) app a packet a day, and I am so happy I came across this book.
Most book shops should have the book, otherwise you can find it in an online-bookstore.
Good luck : o )

I believe you should worry about quitting when you are no longer in a stressful situation. If I was in the service right now, bring on the cigarettes. There are a lot worse things you could be doing to relieve stress then cigarettes. If they help get you through it, keep smoking. You can kick the habit at a later date, when life gets back to normal.
Thank you for serving our country.

You should be proud. It is no reason to get out. Many people smoke in the Army. At least they did when I was in. Try using the patch for just a couple weeks then go cold turkey. Don't wear it at night though.

i would say, cold turkey is the best. it worked for me for the longest time. then i went into depression and started again. been trying to quit since. did you know , you only have the urge to smoke for 7 seconds. you just dont know how long till the urge comes back.
i support the troops and thank you for your sacrifice and service to this country. good job.
