I have seen more than once the consequences of untied shoes on feet in public. Usually the ending was simple: lace caught on escalator, panic happened, the fall was inevitable. Normally a bit of blood was involved. Once a semi-serious head injury, kid was taken away on a stretcher; the other time the kid lost a tooth or two.
Normally it is a kid, from eight to twenty years of age, male, with an attitude that nothing bad could happen to them. I worked in that building for four years, the escalator was right outside my office and I saw it happen often.
If someone doesn't want to tie their shoe after I mention it to them, that is their business, but the appropriate thing to do is
a) tell the person that their shoe is untied
b) person with untied shoe say a simple, polite "thank you".

I do want to know if Mine are untied,at 47 it could make for a nasty fall. But Living in Hollywood, fashion statements are an issue and the people leaving the things untied might be making that statement,as stupid as it may look to me,the baby boomer.Same catagorey as falling down pants"make sure those boxers are clean",Uggs with mini skirts and no leggings,"longettes",not quite shorts or long pants that can only pass in Calif.I was the Madonna dressing girl early 80's.Crucifixes galore, chinese black pants rolled up and ballet slippers.I felt "hot" and thought everyone else knew i was too. So,tie your shoes if you don't want to trip on them or just remember what a trip they can be.

Actually, I've grown to dread being told to tie my shoes. I once owned a pair of shoes with exceptionally long laces. Although they were almost never untied, I was being told to tie them constantly, as people assumed that the lenth trailing from them meant they were untied. I could never quite find another pair of laces to fit, and I didn't want to cut off the excess from the laces, since I didn't want the laces to fray.
I've seldom "tripped over my own shoelaces," although I am quite the clutz.
As I've grown older, I have several problems with my feet swelling and almost exclusively wear slip-on shoes - sandals or mules. It seems to have taken care of this situation.

I'm a barefooter now but when I still wore shoes I have fallen from having loose shoelaces... not tripped -I think I usually noticed when they became untied or indeed people would tell me- but my laces caught on the bicycle pedals a couple times in my high school years. Fortunately I wasn't hurt but it was scary falling and having my foot stuck to the pedal, more scary than those times I've taken a fall with my legs free. Could easily have broken something! I wouldn't like walking around with them untied either, it was in fashion here a few years ago, lots of kids would walk around with their laces untied. But I've never understood how they keep from tripping, even if you always catch yourself and never take a real fall, I think it'd still be annoying to step on the laces.

I have not been told to tie my shoes, since I was a child. I have been told that my shoes were untied, and I do the same; let them make the decision if they want to tie their shoes or trip and fall! There was a time when it was cool to leave the shoes (sneakers) untied.

Great question.
It's funny that as I get older (now 36)....no one ever seems to mention it. I would definitely appreciate it if they did.
When I was in my teens and ealry 20s....many seemed to mention it (mostly guys though). Who knows why???
