French is the official language. If you are going to the capital city (Dakar) and in some other major city, you will easitly find people speaking french around you. However in smaller areas or villages, people may not speak or read it as well as you may think. Traditional local languages are Wolof, Peul or Toucouleur, Serer, Diola, but mainly everyone in Senegal speak Wolof.
Alos, in the capital city and in touristic areas, because of the tourism, you will find people, vendors or guides who speak fluent english, german, italian or spanish (it's actually amazing how they just pick the languages so easily). that's about it...
