There are lots of other reasons that people cut themselves that are differnet than why I do it. Some people do it to feel something, because they're so numb from past traumas. Other people do it to distract themselves from the emotional pain the feel, just like if you stub your toe and the slam your finger in the door you forget that your toe hurts. So people (particularly survivors of sexual abuse) do it to make their bodies less attractive to potential predators. For other people it's about control - they feel like they have no control over their lives, and cutting gives them control over their body, and their experience of physical pain. It can also be a way of proving to themself that they're strong enough to do it. Sometimes it is to get attention, particularly among kids who may not be getting much attention at home (maybe because their parents are going through a divorce, a sibling is seriously ill, or their primary caregiver is abusing drugs or alcohol). There are some number of people who cut themselves just to fit in with the "emo" crowd, but these people definitely represent the minority of cutters. The vast majority of the time, there's something behind it other than that the person thinks it's just a cool or fun thing to do.
Just as there are lots of reasons people cut, there are lots of different things that people do it with, and the cuts can range from something that barely even breaks the skin, to something that needs stitches and may even have them in the ER for blood loss. How much it hurts would depend on how deeply they cut, and what they use. I could go into a lot more detail about that aspect of it, but I don't feel it would be appropriate to do so (and would almost certainly end with my answer being deleted).
I'm not sure that I can explain exactly why I cut because I'm not always sure I know why I do it, and it's not always for the same reason, but I'll try... A lot of the time when I cut myself it's because of something silly that I said or did that I was embarased about, something that I'm sure no one else who was there even remembers, but I'll get so angry at myself that the only way to let it go is to hurt myself. It's kind of like a punishment that then once I've done that I don't have to think about whatever it was anymore. Of course, whatever was bothering me always ends up coming back, but it does work for a while.
Other times it was basically for attention, even though no one ever saw the cuts. That was mainly when I was younger. When I'd cut myself, I'd want so much for someone to see it, and I don't even know exactly what I wanted them to do, I just wanted someone, some adult in my life, to notice that something was wrong. That definitely never worked, though, because the next day I'd wake up and put on a long sleeve shirt to make sure that no one could see the cuts.
I'm not going to tell you what I use, because I don't think it's appropriate. It definitely does hurt, which is a lot of the point of doing it, but it doesn't hurt all that much since I don't cut very deep (ironically, the worst scar I have really is from when my cat scratched me).
I don't know why your asking this. I'm hoping it's nothing more than intellectual curiosity. It doesn't sound like you've ever cut yourself before, and assuming that's the case, I would strongly recommend that you NOT try it. The first time I cut myself it seemed like a good idea, and quite honestly, it did (and still does) help for a while. But it was probably the single stupidest thing I've ever done, and I would strongly recommmend against trying it.

I don't cut. But I get in touch with my subconscious. People hurt, all of us hurt, in small ways, in big ways. Some people cut themselves, others are addicted to all sorts of stuff. When people hurt, and they don't know really what it is, or how to solve their problems, that's what they do.
Most everyone is dysfunctional in some ways. I would say 70% is average dysfunctional, 20% seriously dysfunctional, 10% the incorrigibles and psychotics. The figures are just my guesses, but I think reality would be around there, give or take a few % here and there.

Some people cut for attention others cut because it's the only way to deal with the emotional pain that fills them.
People use anything from safety pins to scissors to razors or anything else sharp you can find.
Ya it hurts but that's the point and after a whole it stops bothering you.

To escape emotional reality! Usually people who cut themselfs are so worked up they can't feel it until afterwards. Some get a rush from the pain. Usually knives or razors/blades, ANYTHING sharp.

sometimes when someone feels tremendous emotional pain the cutting can be like a distraction. Have you ever been really angry and pound your fist into your pillow? It is sort of like that. Sometime when someone has been physically abused for a long time--that child learns to block out physical pain. It is a good idea to never start cutting. it becomes almost addictive. it is hard to break that action.

They do it because it raises certain neurotransmitters (endorphins) taking away from their mental pain. They cut with anything sharp, like a razor blade for example. They don't feel the pain the same way you and I do. Go to webmd.com and search "cutting" where you can learn lots more than I could ever post here.

As a cutter myself, if something has really upset me and the pain seems to much to take....I take a plastic knife and just bare down hard on my wrist and keep going untill the pain of my cutting has made me forget about what had made me upset in the first place.

cutting is done when you have emotional or physical pain to deal with. when people cut themselves they are getting secondary pain thus releasing the first and foremost pain they are dealing with. weather this be emotional or physical pain, the brain releases endorphins a kinda high to kill the primary pain and therefore that's why they do it. sharp instrument credit card knife, anything that will cut. it does not hurt them since they are getting rid of the primary pain.
