I would personally recommend an elliptical machine. It works some really core muscles (thighs, butt, abdomen, calves, etc), and gives a great cardio workout. Get one with the option to work the arm muscles too, then you'll cover alot more.

I have a personal trainer and he told me NEVER EVER use a treadmill. The treadmill, contrary to popular belief actually is bad for you. Though it does give you the cardio workout you need it takes away the natural movement of the body and gives you a robot like posture and routine. since there is only so much space to extend your legs your body is limited to only robotic types of movements and that can damage your knees and give you weak ankles.
If anything you can use the elliptical or the bike that actually let you get a full extention of the leg, not causing joint problems or weakness.

I say treadmill. You can easily adjust your workout and the benefits of the cardio exercise is great. You burn lots of calories and many say walking is one of the best forms of exercise. I found this article you may want to read.

I agree with "The Devil's Lola" but to get fit you need to work out a lot. Sex wouldn't cover it as you don't ache like hell everytime you do it.
It all depends on what muscle group you want to enhance to be able to say what is best for you.
I won't leave the gym until I feel completely screwed, if I don't ache for days I feel I have failed.
