ok so i have a friend who is 16 and has been going out with her boyfriend(also 16) for almost 6 months. recently she told me that they tried to have sex. she was a virgin, and she has the type of family that would disown her if they found out she was doing this. hes not a virgin and i think she did it to satisfy him, not bc she wants to. anyways she said they used protection but shes not on birth control. she is very naive and doesnt realize consequences of sex.
my questions are:
how effective is birth control? how do they affect you periods?
how effective are condoms?
and since hes not a virgin, how can i tell her that she should make sure he doesn't have STD's?
she asked my opinion

Condoms work best, but, If she is 16 and her parents are that way, hope they don't ever find out. That guys life will be destroyed and he will be listed as a sex offender. And no one is worth that. Tell them to wait till 18. They can't deny having sex if she gets pregnant.

First of all, birth control is sometimes used to regulate your period. So your period should be coming like clockwork if is wasn't. Condoms can be quite effective if used correctly & they don't bust or anything.
Just ask her if he's been tested for STD's? You just want to know if she's taking percautions, as you are looking out for her.

You should ask her, what if her parents find out, or what if she gets pg? These are all things to consider.

Tell her to make sure that she NEVER goes without condoms or any other type of STD protection. Birth control does NOT protect against STDs, & that sometimes STDs are not discovered until a good while later.

Birth control is about 99% effective and usually regulates your periods.
Condoms are only about 90% effective.
And if your going to have sex with someone most definatly ask them about there sexual history like:
How many partners they've had
If they've been checked out for stds
Stuff like that.
