A canary can breed in the year following its hatch, so if it hatched in January you can breed it the following January. Canaries are passerines and birds of that order are mature at one year. Be sure if you are preparing your bird to breed that you provide an excellent diet with extra protein. Also, breeding season is brought about the length of day. Make sure you cover your bird at sunset and uncover it at sunrise with a dark cloth. That way it is experiencing the natural length of day. I would disagree with the person that recommended pellets. I dont know any breeders who use pellets. I would feed a very fresh blend of seed, good fresh dark greens, fruit, carrots and other vegies, hard boiled egg with the shell and whole grain breads.

Generally, one year to 1 and 1/2 years of age is appropriate. Feed your birds pellet food and add 10% seeds 10% fruits and veggies and hard cooked egg with crumbled shell. The extra protein and calcium really is needed. It takes a lot of energy to lay eggs. Buy the right kind of nest. Canaries are different from parrots. These can be found at most pet shops or on line. Good luck. It takes some dedication and can be very rewarding. Have a tweet year.
