There are hundreds of types of Linux to choose from, and well over half of them (probably more like 75-80%) are free. Go to www.distrowatch.com to read about some of them and look at which ones are most popular. It also has a link where you can compare some of them to figure out the differences.

Personally I like OpenSUSE best, and it's great to learn with. Feel free to send me an IM if you want to chat about Linux.

Avoid ubuntu if you want to switch from Windoze to Linux. Ubuntu suffers from using old hat debian and it does not even load with the latest desktop - windoze friendly- kde3.5. Make sure you use KDE as a desktop, unless your an experienced Linux user.

I recommend Mandriva as the easiest and most friendly and if you want to still use Windoze you can. just move the slider for allocating the disc space when asked by the free linux.

I could spend a lot of time explaining the merits of each system, but they would be lost to most. Forget about iso torrent its now old hack go direct.
You can download a free 2007 Mandrive from www.mandriva.com Warning if you have 64 bit machines you will need to download the 2007 for 64 bit versions.

homestead windows 7 and Mac OS X are both "closed" the position you may't software or reprogram the OS. It also signifies that they don't look to be loose. both run round $100 or more suitable to purchase the OS to position in on your computing gadget or pc. Ubuntu is the most person pleasant flavor of Linux and that is positioned on the link below. you may burn it to a DVD and then boot up that DVD and deploy from it. that is a stay CD so that you may also boot the OS from the DVD and attempt it out previously setting up it for your computing gadget. purely undergo in concepts when you're fiddling with the OS on the DVD, every time you shutdown you'll lose each and each of the things you downloaded because the CD won't be able to keep more suitable information after it become burned. good success. No offense yet you do not sound too knowledgeable and also you would want to ascertain tutorials on the thanks to apply Ubuntu previously taking the plunge.

Hello,
there is no standard Linux distribution. Every distribution have
advantages and disadvantages. Ubuntu is a easy to use distribu-
tion. There are four Ubuntu distributions: 1. Ubuntu: that is with
a Gnome GUI; 2. Kubuntu: that is with a KDE GUI; 3. Xubuntu: that
is with Xfce and is thought for users with old hardware or limited
memory; 4. Edubuntu: that is thought for schools. To learn more
about Ubuntu go to http://www.ubuntu.com .
For a bigger view of Linux distributions go to
http://lwn.net/Distributions/

You should consider what you want from your Linux distribu-
tion, what want do you do with system.

My recommendation would be Ubuntu or Kubuntu for easy to
use and because there is a really good update mechanism.
And if you want a full customize able system than I would
you point to Gentoo ( http://www.gentoo.org ).
But at the end it is your decision.
Good luck. ~;)

This question has sort of been answered already. Do a search in Yahoo answers. Finding it is only half the problem. The next is choosing one. There are so many that I cannot figure out which one to use so I quit. I'll try again later. Good luck!
