Crate training is the BEST method of house traing a puppy. Pad training can confuse them and you're right, rubbing noses in it has no affect and is cruel! Here's some info on crate training. Just remember, the crate should be no larger than the puppy to stand, sit, turn around, and lay comfortably.

No, do not rub his face in it. All that gives you is a stinky-faced dog.
Keep in mind that puppies don't have complete control of themselves until they are about 6 months old.
Of course, training should start way before that. If you want him to be trained to go outside to potty, take him outside about 6 times a day (24 hour period) and when he potty's, praise him highly. Be careful that he doesn't being to associate going outside with play time. Take him only to potty then bring him in.
If he goes in the house and you see him doing it, yell NO and take him immediately outside. Even if he's already gone inside, take him out anyway so he will come to associsate outside with the place to potty. If you do not see him go inside, do not punish him later when you find it because he will not remember one minute after he's done it and won't know why you are punishing him.
Good luck.

I've got a few ideas...
Try bringing your new addition outside at regular times of the day. Habit is always a good way to train. When you get up in the morning, bring him/her out... depending on whether or not you work outside of the home, this could be a difficult task.
It could also depend on the breed. Some breeds are easier to train than others.
If it is a small dog, I have known owners to litter train their pups by supplying a rubber mat with higher edges... they put newpaper and/or papertowels on it... If it is a larger breed, this method is not advised.
Regular feedings, at specific times of the day help you know when Fido NEEDS to go out too.
One thing I have found helpful for night time training, is to not feed the dog after 6:00pm. This way Puppy doesn't have anything to eliminate during the night making it easier to hold it in.
Keeping a schedule will help you remember when your pup has to go.
Good Luck!!!
Hope I have helped...:-)

Never rub the puppies in the poo!!! All that does is make them afraid of you, and they will hide from you after they poop. If you are worried about the rental, get a large dog crate, or a baby gate for the kitchen, when you are not at home. When you are at home, constant watching is the key...watch the puppy for the tell-tale signs that he is looking for a place to poop or pee. When you see that, take the puppy outside immediately to the place where you want him to go. Stay there until he goes. And if he does have an accident in the house, take the poop outside and put it where you want the dog to go and let him smell it there.

We actually suggest that dog owners NOT train their dogs to go on wee-wee pads or newspaper, because this trains the dog to eliminate inside your house instead of outside. The dog cannot distinguish between it being OK to pee on the pad, and not on any other paper or fabric on the floor...

To train a dog to go outside, you need to first put the dog on a feeding schedule. We suggest feeding the dog at the SAME TIME every day. This helps to "program" the dog’s bowels and bladder to regular feeding and elimination times.

Don't leave food out for the dog all day. If it eats all day, it'll poop all day. But keep plenty of fresh water available the pooch.

Keep in mind that puppies don't have any conscious control of their bowels or bladder until they're about 16 weeks (4 months) old. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't start training your puppy right away; it means that it may still have accidents in the house until it has better control of its body. (Crate training does NOT work for pups younger than 4 months.)

Dogs usually have to potty about 10-15 minutes after they eat, when they first wake up in the morning, and when they wake up from a nap. Use these opportune times to take the pooch outside. As soon as it goes potty, praise it a lot for being a good dog.

Dogs will also walk in tight circles with their nose to the ground when they have to go to potty. Whenever you see this behavior ask the dog, "potty outside?" and take the dog out immediately. Again, as soon as the pup goes potty, praise it a lot for being a good dog.

No NOT rub the dog’s nose in its messes. That teaches the dog nothing except to fear your touch.

If you're consistent and vigilant your dog should be house-trained in no time.

Just take him out alot. My vet gave me this advice. when he poos or pees on your floor take puppy and tell him no do not yell or rub nose in it. wipe up the pee with a paper towel (no cleaner) and take it outside and let your puppy sniff it and praise him. Same with the poo. Dogs like to go where they have gone before. took me about a week. But there still going to have trouble until there about 4 month of age.Until they learn to control there bladder. dont use pads your just confusing him. This is what i used on my carpet. One bottle of hedrogen pexiode,1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon dish soap. check for color fasting. I have dark green carpet and it didn't bother. pour it on the pee spot do not rub in. watch it bubble. perixode kills the bacteria in the pee baking soda neutuilizes the oder the dish soap give fresh smell. When it dries it does leave a white residue which come right up with carpet cleaner. When puppy is fully potty trained rent a carpet cleaner. I thought I was going to have to replace all the carpet in our apartment. But this worked. Hope it does for you. Good luck.

you use a potty training pad!!!! I had one for my dog and she learned to use it in about 3 to 5 days ( NO LIE )!!!!!! Also she was so So SO mischievious it wasn't even funny!!!! She acted so bad its hard to believe she acually learned. So that should proove that it acually does work. just DON'T rub his/her face in it that's just CRUEL!!!! and DON'T use any of that bad smelling crap that could make the dog run away and not come back just 'cuz he/she didn't like the smell!! I don't think crate training would work just because dogs DO NOT like to be cooped up in a small area: It doesn't matter how long it is. Just squirt him/her w/ a water bottle when he/she doesn't use the pad, BUT ONLY when you see him/her not using the pad and after you do that go put him/her on the pad and say something like "GO potty" or something like that!!!!

Noooooooo please, don't do the crate.
you can potty train your puppy if you are on the ball and learn when your puppy probably needs to go potty ...like (5-10 min. after feeding) ...and get to know what your puppy lookslike when it needs to potty...(like doing little circles and whining and 'looking' for a place)
All you have to do is be active with your puppy and it won't take very long at all. Honest.
If you crate your dog all you do it put it where you don't have to deal with him/her. What would you feel like....being a cute little adorable puppy....in a dark, plastic, not very warm and cuddly BOX with big airholes.
Seriously....you can potty train this puppy if you don't slack and see the signs and really love your puppy. ~big smile~
It's gonna make some mistakes.....who doesn't?
But it will be much better if you do it hands on and not in a crate...yuch!
Have fun with your new furry kid! I'll bet it's a cuty-pie!!!

You have to start training the dog as young as possible...

You need to take the dog outside to go to the toilet after eating and as soon as it wakes up... Wait outside with it until it's finished its business, then reward it with pats, hugs, treats etc etc.

If they dog goes inside disipline it.. and send it outside.

Make sure you dont confuse the dog by taking it outside through different exits, stick to one door - such as the back door - eventually when the dog is trained - it will stand at the backdoor when it needs to go, and you will just have to let it out.

Good Luck :)

Also - put newspaper down in the sleeping area for the dog, as its a puppy - it will go many times during the night... eventually it'll learn to only go once... i suggest you keep a b ed in the laundry with newspaper on the floor.

Crate training is very effective! I have done this with my dogs and it has been the best method so far. Dogs don't want to go where they sleep, and it also helps with getting them on a routine. A routine is key with training your pet because they learn what to expect next. I also found that with the crate training it gives the dogs a sense of security. Each night the go back into their crate to go to bed. With having them in this routine if you need to travel it makes it easier if you need to have some one watch them or take them with you. Less likely for them to destruct. But it is important to not lock them up in their crate all the time, like I said earlier routine is key. Good luck to you.
