My Winchester model 70 in 338win mag w/Leopold 1.5 to 4 is dead accurate at 300yds. Have taken Deer, Elk and Black Bear in Montana. Absolutely no complaints about the rifle, you don't notice the kick when shooting at game.

I assume you want info on .338 Win Mag rather than .338 Federal or .338 Rem Ultra-Mag. The .338 Win Mag is one of the most popular elk rifles.

Since this a medium range gun (to 300+ yards) cartridge, I recommend a 2-7 power variable in the medium price ($200-250) range of name brand (Burris, Nikon, Leupold, Redfield, Bushnell, Cabella's, Simmons, etc) rifle scopes. The 7 power is useful for verifying at longer ranges that the animal you are aiming at is the one you want to shoot and the 2 power is good for finding closer animals moving in brush.

Ammunition will range from about $15 to $25 per box. Some "Premium" ammunition will be higher. The one I had shot best with the basic Remington Core-Lock ammo, a good bullet loading which is at the lower end of the price range. The recoil is more than a .30-06, but recoil from larger calibers are more of a shove than the sharp jab of smaller calibers from cartridges with similar foot-pounds of recoil.

Okay, which .338 are you asking about? Federal cartirdges just came out with a new .338 Federal based on the .308 Winchester cartridge necked up to .338 that is as mild recoiling as a .30-06 but nearly as powerfull as the .300 Mag. If I were going to buy one this is the one I'd try.

Get a good quality scope like Leopold. I have a Burris 4x on my Ruger #1 .458 Winchester Magnum. Consider also the Burris scopes.

Well, I don't have a 338, but I do have an 8x68, and that's close, though the brass is expensive. I don't want to spend all day at the bench on the loads, but it isn't that bad for recoil. I was planning to put a 2 1/2-6 variable scope on it, but I got a much better price on a 2-7x, so that's what it's had all these years.
