My recommendation to you is to have a small to medium size short haired mix breed dog. Usually their temperament is good, the baby can't pull long hair, and you don't have to comb it out. Plus with a mix breed dog, you have a new gene pool.....so there is even a better chance that the dog won't have any inherited problems that many pure breeds have. Usually the smaller the dog, the longer the life span, especially if you have them on a good premium food and keep them up to date with their shots...and finally..on heartworm protection. Your vet can tell you all about this. Go to a shelter......and pick out a sweet dog that can bond with your baby. They'll grow together...and they'll be very close. I feel this is the best thing you can do for your child. It sure worked on me when I was young.

Small dogs and small children don't mix. Small dogs tend to be nippy, and a child can easily injure a small dog in return. I would suggest a medium to large dog. Many people make the mistake of getting a small dog with young children, and have to get rid of it later on when they realize it was a bad idea.

Labs, German shepherds, pit bulls, staffordshire terriers, newfoundlands, golden retrievers, and great danes are all good choices. You want something large, calm, and sturdy. Also, it's better to get an adult dog than a puppy if you have a small child- again, for the safety of both of them.

BTW I see a lot of people suggesting boston terrier- they are NOT good for children! They are very hyper and can easily knock down a small child, and they cannot handle being chased for long periods of time because of their smushed-in faces- they will overheat and have breathing problems. They're okay to visit with kids, but not to live with them.

Nothing pug nosed does well with kids;
No small terriers, they nip and dig;
Nothing delicate like min pin or Italian greyhound, they're prone to broken legs;
No toy breeds whatsoever.

Defiantly a Boston terrier. They are the sweetest dogs and GREAT with children. I have two children, 3 and 5. My Boston is 3 1/2. The three of them run and play so much. Other children come over to play and my dog loves them all. He doesn't overheat or whatever that other one was saying. The kids love him. My sister has my dogs brother. Hers is great with her kids also. The are tough looking dogs, but so darn cute. They are very affectionate towards everyone. People are always telling me what a beautiful dog and he is so friendly with everyone. They are not hard to house train, and they sleep alot! I know you would just love him. My only other recommendation is no matter what breed you choose, try and find out about the parents temperaments. This has a big influence on your dogs behavior. Good Luck!

It depends on if you want something that sheds. If not then I would look into Miniature Schanuzer, Toy Poodle, Bichon Frise, Shih-tzu, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier. I to have a 21 month old daughter and we have a Mini Schnauzer and a Toy Poodle they love kids and they are small and I'm a stay at home mom and if I leave the house they go with us. I would not get a Pug they shed like crazy and Min Pin are very hyper so are Jack russells anything with real short hair will shed like crazy if it gets on your clothes you can't get it off. My mom has a Chihuahua and he is black don't ever go over with a white shirt or you will have black hair every where and you have to change to get them off of you. Just keep that in mind if the baby drops some off and like all toddlers will pick it up to eat it make sure there are no doggy hairs with mine they don't shed so I don't have to worry with that. Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com and look up and see what type of dog would be great with your family. Good luck Katelyn just loves Ruby -Toy Poodle and Bubba- Miniature Schnauzer (she named him).

Boston Terrier.
They're small, usually friendly and calm-ish for a terrier. They look like little Boxers, so they're tough and cute.
I'd stay away from Min Pins, Jack Russels, and things like that. They're cute and tough-ish, but too high strung for a baby and for a busy mom.
Good luck!
Don't forget to try the shelter or a breed rescue when you decide on a dog.

don't get one unless you can spend a lot of time training the dog. puppies can be hyper, and might not be a good idea for a 20 mth old. make sure you won't have your hands too full with the baby AND the dog. that's how dogs end up in shelters.

According to the AKC, the Chihaua is the most prone to attack babies. The least is a Pug or Jack Russell Terrier. Hope it helps.
