It's in thier nature. They mostly think its playing until they bite down on the cat. But most dogs think they are doing good. Just like cats who bring you dead mice and birds. Hunter and prey, natures game.

Dogs instinctively chase little critters (and toys) that appear to be running away from them... probably a hereditary predator-prey thing. I've noticed that when my cats saunter right up to my dog's face, she accepts them. But when she is feeling playful, all she has to do is "fake a move" like she's about to pounce. If the cat so much as flinches, the dog gives chase, and the cat, usually, runs. On the other hand, sometimes my fat cats get fed up with dog games and they have been known to give a sharp-clawed swat to her nose. Makes for a good dog-game -ender.

this is just a folktale..here it goes..

Why Dogs Chase Cats
retold by
S. E. Schlosser

Once long ago, Dog was married to Cat. They were happy together, but every night when Dog came home from work, Cat said she was too sick to make him dinner. Dog was patient with this talk for a while, but he soon got mighty tired of fixing dinner for them both after a hard day's work. After all, Cat just stayed home all day long.

One day, Dog told Cat he was going to work, but instead he hid in the cupboard and watched Cat to see if she really was sick. As soon as Cat thought Dog had left, she started playing games with Kitten. They laughed and ran about. Cat wasn't the least bit sick.

Dog jumped out of the cupboard. When Cat saw him, she stuck a marble in her cheek and told Dog she had a toothache. Dog got so mad at her he started chasing her around and around the house.

Dogs have been chasing Cats ever since.

Thats a very insightful and thought provoking question. There is no mechanism that makes them more likely to chase a cat than any other animal. Why do they chase cats in particular and very often? Beats me

My dawg loved to kill cats and i asked him once why, and he didn't say a thing, my neighbour told me while she looked at my dog that a neighbor around the corner were just sitting in the living room and a wild dog came thru the door screen and killed there Poor cat right in front of them,I told her that I would sure keep an eye out for that wild Dog. I tied Dog up for a while.he later killed another persons cat and I said I was sorry and sent him a card of sympathy with fifty dollars in it. with a note saying how sorry I was.

seriously?
Predator/ prey instinct I think. The cats are small and furry, so they look edible.
Most dogs will chase anything that runs. That's why you're not supposed to run from an angry dog.
Not sure what you are supposed to do though...

Because dogs are hunters by nature and will chase anything that runs or moves, not just cats.

Cars, bikes, birds, people and other small animals

why do dogs chase cars, or people, or frisbees. its just natural. to dogs and cats, anything that moves is prey. its natural instinct. it would be exactly the same in the wild.

i became advised its a predatory concern. the canine see them as one in all those prey, yet maximum canine particularly do no longer look to renowned what to do with the cat whilst they get it, and different canine won't bothercats in any respect. yet in announcing this.... My pal had 2 costly ragdoll cats that she constantly saved in doors. at some point, the older of the two have been given outdoors and became mauled by ability of their canine. i assume it would desire to be a territorial concern
