yes, it is produced in the adrenal cortex and is regulated by the hormonal hypothalamus- hipofisis system by a negative feedback mechanism.
Anterior hipofisis (in the brain)- releases ACTH which activates the cortisol production by the stimulation of the breakdown of Pregnelonone, which is going to go trhough different enzymes processes, and one of the products is the Cortisol, a hormone that is related with the awake and alert state, and stress situations. It also has to do with the carbohidrates, lipids and proteins metabolism.. its levels are increased during the morning time. For example, when we are sleeping cortisol levels dicreases.. that is in the circardian cycle response.
