Well, they would have been enough further south that the weather would not have been so horrible for them. That might have meant they could retain their snooty ways on their own, and never be forced to rely on the kindness of their Indian neighbors. Where the speculation goes from there, I can't say. New York winters are, after all, not exactly mild.
