I am tring to find out what kind of Scotch and Cigar to buy my boyfriend . I prefer a Scotch that has aged at least 12 years or more and has a mild but mellow taste to it. He was in the Navy for 22 years and would really like to know what would be the very best Scotch to get and what type of cigar to go with. Thanks for all your help.

Any single malt 12 year old or older will please him... I like GLENMORANGIE and GLENLIVET. Ask your local liquor store worker... He/she can tell you what sells best in single malts... As far as cigars goes I used to smoke La Finca (quit last April). La Finca is a cheap but flavor full smoke... (This all-Nicaraguan puro has been handcrafted since 1972 in Esteli, Nicaragua. Mild to medium in body with a nutty, naturally sweet flavor, this cigar is well-balanced in flavor. Paired with its economical prices, this has become Nicaragua's largest-selling brand.)
If you go to http://www.jrcigar.com/index.cfm. Click on CIGARS then HAND MADE then scroll down to LA FINCA your will find it.

I prefer the Ammo Box but that is out of stock a lot... Go for the Joyas with the EMS color. It's $37.95 a box (25 cigars).

PS. - Please thank him for serving....
PPS. - My Wife's brother retired a few years ago after 23 years. He was a sub comander.

Scotch and Cigars really don't compliment each other as well as normally presumed. Their flavors tend to clash and overpower each other as they both are traditionally hovering on the bitter end of the flavor scale (with some exceptions). With that being said, as an avid drinker and cigar afficianado, I would be happy to offer some advice.....

Let's start with Scotch: The Glenlivet is an excellent, smoky yet refined beverage. Nice earthen, peaty undertones without being profound. Chivas, Dewars and Glenfiddich are also top shelf brands that while are unique to each other, share a similar flavor profile. Chivas is in my opinion the mildest. Scotch mellows as it is aged, so the longer it has been aged, the mellower and more complex the flavor profile.
Depending on your budget, you could go nuts and spend $235 on a fifth of Johnny Walker Blue label. Like any other consumer good, quality and enjoyment is subjective to the recipient. I strongly feel that you will be able to purchase a high end fifth of Scotch for under $75

Smokes, what to look for and how to choose.....

Ultimately, this is a crapshoot without knowing what your boyfriend's taste is. Some great cigars all of varying price include, Padron, CAO, Cohiba, Ashton, Romeo y Julietta. Padron 3000's are about $9 a stick and are a GREAT SMOKE. They also offer a 40 year anniversary cigar for $25 a stick. There are a lot of other variables to consider, Maduro vs. Natural wrapper, country of origin. You can find a number of cigars grown from Cuban seed, but that does not make them Cuban. Darker cigars are more robust, while lighter cigars are more pungent. The best thing I can say on this topic is that you have a few basics to go into a store with, but talk to the shop keeper. This is their passion and they will gladly assist and further educate you in making a sound purchase.

The Glenlivet has an 18 year old Scotch which is awesome, and I wholeheartedly cast my vote for it. If you stick with the brands of cigar that I had mentioned, your boyfriend should be fairly pleased as well.... don't forget a cutter, also makes a nice complimenting gift.

I know its a long answer, but hope it helps you in your shopping :-)

I agree that cigars are not often well mated to scotch, but being an avid connoisseur of both, I would recommend a Fuente Flor Fina 8-5-8 maduro paired with a lighter scotch, like Glenmorganie or Oban. Both of these scotches are fine quality and mate fairly well with a good strong cigar.

You could go the other way and pair an unimpressively flavorless cigar with a full bodied scotch (such as just about ANY macanudo with a natural wrapper paired with a very flavorfull scotch such as Macallen 18) But I think the first choice I listed would be optimal.

The cigars I can't help you with because I was never fond of them (I always inhaled and made myself sick!)

The Scotch is a different story; Here's my take on it:
Single malts are different than blends. The singles have a more distinct and robust taste because they only have one taste. Then blends are more than one aged together and therefore they mellow each others tastes down.

For a cheaper but good Scotch, Dewars is alright.
A little more top shelf, go with Johnny Walker Red.
But if price is no object and quality is everything, go with Glenlivet and/or Glenfiddich. They're the real deal! One is a single malt and the other is a blend (never can remember which is which).
Both are extremely smooth and have an awesome taste (of course they taste like scotch, but after drinking other brands, you can definitely tell why they cost like they do)

Macallan scotch is a very nice Scotch. They have it it 12 and 14 and 18 year old. Never tried the 18, but if it is better than the 12 and 14 year old stuff, your Fiance' is in for a treat.
Cigars
I would get him a Macanudo. They are top of the line and go well with the scotch.
Good Luck and Congratulations

Anything from the Arturo Fuente line would be a fine cigar. But for whiskey, I prefer the Irish. Jameson's is the best in my book!
