Now, I'm quite aware that there is no such thing as a 100% safe job in the Army. (No smart remarks please.)

if you want to be in the action.. naval force / pilot

nurses, engineers, doctors, etc. are put more on the field... rarely get attacked/captured... but from time to time, a terrorist will blow up anything with a foreign flag on it..

military recruiter - if you recruit a boy with a crazy mother, then if that boy dies, your screwed...

SAFEST job would hafta be an analyzer, coordinator or sum kind of computer/official job in which you can stay at a base and communicate with the troops. Like the ITT Tech commercial =x

There are lots of jobs in the Military that are safe and do not involve getting shot at or being bombed. Try the Submarine Service, it is very safe. I spent 30 years in the Navy and most of it riding Submarines. You can learn a lot more on Subs. Time to study. You can even learn how to operate a Nuclear Reactor. Only the Navy can tech you that. No other service has Nuclear Reactors that enlisted personnel can operate. If you go that way and when you get out of the Navy you can get a very high paid job at any electrical power plant.

Considering the fact that the Army is going through a transformation that pulls all soldiers from non-deploying jobs to deploying jobs, if you want a safe job, join the Air Force. They only deploy to Iraq for 4 months at a time.

Good luck.

In today's conflicts it would be real hard to say. In general, jobs that tend to stay on a base are safer but those folks have taken their share of casualties in Iraq. I've know people in maintenance and finance that have been casualties in Iraq.

The combat arms guys, MPs, and engineers tend to do more of the patroling but people in other fields will often be part of a quick reaction force (QRF) and man guard posts.

Some sort of administrative position. But EVERYBODY is a rifleman in the Army. If you're needed on the front line, you're going! A pilot gets shot down guess what? He is now in the infantry ! Tanks gets blown up, guess what? The crew is now in the infantry. If you're in your office and the base gets attacked, guess what? You're in the infantry! See where I am going with this??

About 90% of the Army is pretty safe.
For every guy on the front line, there's
9 other guys in the rear.
There are exceptions.
I recall one guy who was so bad with
a weapon, the safest place was in front
of the bullseye.

Actually, joining the Air Guard was a pretty good choice for our President. After going AWOL, he was elected president twice. Hey, look at the results. Then you are really safe.

The safest job in the army, is in the infantry.

The old guard has not lost a Soldier in over fifty years. Just tell your recruiter that you want to be in the Old Guard. They guard the Tomb of the Unknowns (Formerly Tomb of the Unknown Soldier)
