Once a person put their credit card on the belt, and was dumbfounded when it vanished down inside the machine.

My dad always used to put the coupons on top of the items they are for on the belt, so I grew up thinking that was the way to do things. I remember the first time I went shopping by myself and had a coupon for bread, I put it on top of the loaf, and the cashier didn't see it and picked up the loaf of bread, and the coupon floated to the ground behind the register. I told her that she dropped my coupon and she got really upset with me, and she didn't realize at first that the coupon was at her feet. Needless to say, that was the first and last time I did that. I wonder why my dad never had any problems.

I think it's a somewhat reasonable idea. I mean, stuff on the belt makes it to the cashier, and money and coupons are stuff that you want to get to the cashier. I think they're actually trying to follow the rules. I'm sorry that guy got mad at you.

Oh my... I worked at Wal-Mart for 5 years in any and every department. Just wait, you will get to see some really stupid people if you hang around long enough. Just don't let them get to you, you will learn very quickly that the customer is NOT always right. I don't know why people put things on that belt. I mean seriously, where do they think it's going to end up? DUH!! I have had to take my register apart to get someone's $20 bill. Yeah people are rather strange. Good luck though and remember....Don't let people get to you, you are always going to come in contact with rude people. Just makes sure to smile at them and tell them to have a nice day. That always pisses them off more and it's kinda funny.

I've seen people loose both coupons and money laying them on a belt. They do it because they aren't thinking or they don't realize things end up under the belt.

Oh just wait customers get worse!! They expect you to do everything for them and kiss their toes while your at it. I worked at a grocery store for a year and half. And we actually had to take everything out of the cart and scan it ourselves. We didnt have a belt. Man I got some crazy customers. I had this one guy who got mad at my bagger so I told him he better not yell at her and he was yellin up a storm and his wife was embarressed and other customers were getting mad lol it was horrible. All because she didnt bag his cans perfectly up straight. He made her cry and I was like you be nice to her look what you did! It's like who cares. He an old grumpy jerk. He was so rude to his wife and she appoliged and said he acts like that every single time. Everyone was like why do you put up with that crap. Anyways people are crazy.

I know what you are saying. If they put it directly on the belt, it will just go through the crack. That's their fault, not yours. If I put it on there at all, I put it on top of something like a can. Otherwise just handing it to the cashier is best.

oh yeah. god i hated working checkouts. one bloke went off at me one time cause he told me he gave me a $50, but i only gave him change for a $10. i knew he hadnt, cause he was my first customer of the day, and i didnt have any $50's in my till! it was explained over and over that he couldnt have given me a 50, but he was incredibly abusive. calling me stupid, ***** etc.
he came back two hours later and apoligised. He found the 50 still in his pocket, and felt so bad about abusing me that he came back just to say sorry. this is only one of many horror stories.

don't blame others for your lack of experience. YOU forgot to scan it, not him.
You get paid to work with the public, unless there is a sign telling people not to put things on the belt, they will. It is your job to learn how to deal with them efficiently and politely. If you don't like working with the public, then find another job. Grocery store clerks are QUITE well paid for their efforts.
Your question gets 0 (ZERO) on the sympathy meter.
