I think it depends on the shades of gray and brown and what accessories each uses to coordinate with the other. (I say all this presuming you're trying to coordinate groomsmen with bridesmaids...)

If a guy is wearing a gray suit with a brown tie with an attractive pattern that includes brown, that could work next to a woman in a brown dress. The girl's dress could maybe have a gray or gray-and-brown sash or shawl. She could wear gray pearl earrings/necklace/bracelet, or a gray silk flower pinned at the waist or shoulder, maybe wear pewter-colored shoes (not shiny silver)...

I personally think it would be easier to put a guy in a gray suit and the girl in a gray dress (but a pretty gray, something steely--almost silver but not so shiny--just don't go "elephant drab.")

I wouldn't do grey with brown, but that's just my opinion.
