I've heard that it is pretty rare. I eat raw eggs in dough all the time and I never have had salmanella.

Probability of getting the most common form of salmonella is something on the order of 1-4 chances in 100,000, and among those cases the most frequent cause is raw eggs. The incidence went down in the 1990's -- unable to find more recent data. So it's not true that it's a sure thing, but it is somewhat more probable than winning $10,000 in the Powerball lottery!

You have a 40% chance of contracting salmonella everytime you eat raw eggs. It doesn't mean you will get sick everytime you are exposed. Some strains of salmonella are stronger and more likely to make you sick. Also 3 people can be exposed and only one get sick. It is not a good idea to play roulette with salmonella though. It doesn't matter how clean the eggs are on the outside either. Everytime you get a food born illness you either build and immunity or it makes you sicker depending on how efficient your immune system is.

The Salmonella scare emerged in 1985 when Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers first found the bacteria Salmonella enteritidis not just on the outer shells of eggs, but also inside them. The odds of buying such eggs are extremely low, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) -- one in 20,000. The problem is, there's no way to tell which ones are infected. To be safe, in July the FDA recommended that eggs be kept refrigerated and used within 30 days of purchase.

Reducing the risk of Salmonella enteritidis infection
Keep eggs refrigerated.
Discard cracked or dirty eggs.
Wash hands and cooking utensils with soap and water after contact with raw eggs.
Eat eggs promptly after cooking. Do not keep eggs warm for more than 2hours.
Refrigerate unused or leftover egg- containing foods.
Avoid eating raw eggs (as in homemade ice cream or eggnog). Commercially manufactured ice cream and eggnog are made with pasteurized eggs and have not been linked with Salmonella enteritidis infections.
Avoid restaurant dishes made with raw or undercooked, unpasteurized eggs. Restaurants should use pasteurized eggs in any recipe (such as Hollandaise sauce or caesar salad dressing) that calls for pooling of raw eggs.

neither one of them are right. Salmonella is very unpredictable and very deadly. Don't eat raw eggs. If you want protein that bad, go to the health food store and get some Amino Acids.

I am sure it is very rare. I too have eaten cookie dough, and other raw things with eggs, also drank raw eggs after drinking too much. I used to make a shake with banana's, eggs, nutmeg, milk, and sugar. I never got it from that either.

the only way to "clean" an egg so that it will not transmit Salmonella is to autoclave it...if you autoclave it, all eggs in the store would be hard boiled...any other method of cleaning the egg may leave a residue that could be harmful to humans...so, the best thing to do is thoroughly cook your eggs unless you want lots and lots of bloody diarrhea...
