A Shepherd (Sheep Herd) herds. Shepherd is also a verb, so in effect a shepherd shepherds.

A sheperd "herds" the sheep. In Biblical times the sheperd would even sleep across the opening of the gated corral therefore nothing could get in or out without the sheperd's knowledge. Thus "I am the good sheperd....."

If you had spelled it right, it would have been obvious: a shepHERD herds sheep. Although in English, we refer to a bunch of sheep as a flock; cattle form in herds. So to be precise, a shepherd watches over or tends a flock of sheep which he may herd (verb) in a specific direction.
