and just for personal info, if the batteries DO seem crusty, etc. from contents leaking out, is that dangerous at all? how to handle that?

Leave some of that crusty stuff on your wet skin for awhile and you'll see that it will burn. Dangerous? Depends on your definition of dangerous. Acid burns can be serious, but are not usually life threatening unless you drink it. Find a recycler of the type of battery you have and give it to them.

Check with your local Hazardous Material disposal companies, or you can even call your local Fire Department and they will tell you how to properly dispose of dead batteries.
Whatever you do, do NOT throw them away in your trash...they need to be properly destroyed to protect the environment.
You could store them in zip-loc bags in a cool, dry area...keep them away from heat.

Yes, batteries are classified as toxic or hazardous waste in most states. send them to a local recycling center etc, just dont throw them in the trash.

Yes that is dangerous and I might burn you or explode so go to your local hardware store or sanitation drop off depot and they will dispose of them.
