Imagine a spectrum: more urban, more modern and more liberal in the west; more rural and conservative the farther east you go. Istanbul is absolutely world-class, in the same league as Tokyo, New York, Paris, London, and Seoul. Ankara reminds me very much of Denver, Colorado. Izmir is vibrant yet relaxing. Adana is split almost in half by a motorway, with a very modern high-rise part to the north and an ancient part to the south: the narrow alleys full of craftsmen doing what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. I haven't been farther east than Kharamanmaras, but I'm told that along the Syrian border, the Arabic cultural influence is noticeable, which seems natural.

Consider that the median age in Turkey is about 22, and you get a sense of how young, energetic, and vital the population is. There are children everywhere, which I always notice, since I live in Germany, where there aren't many children. Then, consider that Turkey has more ancient Greek sites than Greece has, and more ancient Roman sites than Italy has, as well as a number of sites important in the history of the Christian religion, and you get a sense of how historic this nation is.

About 30 percent of the population works in agriculture. Turkey is one of only about 7 or 8 net exporters of food in the world. Food is plentiful, varied, cheap, and almost always organically-grown in Turkey. The agricultural areas in southern and western Turkey resemble those of central and southern California. Turkey has nearly every industry you can name, but doesn't have a lot of its own oil or natural gas. It is rich in coal, however.

The people are warm, friendly, generous, and inviting. The drivers can be a little bit crazy: not as crazy as in Cairo or Riyadh, but perhaps like those in Naples.

Shopping is a sport in Turkey, so be prepared to bargain a little. Oh, and the food is excellent, truly one of the great cuisines of the world.

Time passes slower in Turkey than it is in Europe, more of a relaxed life, people doesn't have to spend a lot of money to have fun for example there are usually free street entertainments like concerts and stuff...Also we spend a lot of time in cafes drinking tea-coffee and playing card games, tavla and okey etc.. We love going out to bars at night joining in with live music and felling merry....Turkish starts the day with a long breakfast in mornings that it takes at least an hour, and tea time (dinner if you are an American) is just as long we talk a lot while eating, we love sea sand and sun and enjoy big family picnics....I could talk all night but I am not going to...hope this is enough info for now...
