If you have to ask, it's probably not the job for you. There are always risks in handling aircraft. It's probably safer than some jobs (i.e. construction worker or long-haul trucker for example, those are dangerous jobs), but Air Force pilots do get shot at from time-to-time and sometimes things go wrong with their aircraft. Overall I would agree with the other posters who say it's a very safe job, but I would disagree that it is totally safe given the job they do and the fact that they are around weapons, aircraft and possible enemy fire. (oh and don't get me wrong, U.S. pilots and aircraft are so good that in combat, they generally always survive).

I think it does not matter which military you'r e in as a pilot. There are always dangers attached with being a pilot. You wanna know for certain, go to a recruiting office and ask them. They will give you all the details.

EXTREMELY safe. I used to be a C-5 flight engineer and the airplanes, checklists and training are top-notch and meant to be redundantly safe. Of course it's relative to the mission you fly; fighter pilots are obviously put in harm's way more than cargo jets or air-refueling planes.

Good luck to you!

The Air Force is borderline ridiculously safe everywhere! lol. Come on, if you have to wear protective goggles to make bleach water or clear a paper jam, I'm sure you'll be ok with the most expensive equipment they have. lol

** It's not that bad but the Air Force people know what I'm talking about. ** Take care!

the Air Force was a great experience for me, although not a pilot, it was awsome....if your thinking of joining, go for it....after the first 25days of basic, which will go fast, you will see a new you....at first, Oh man, why did I do this, then, hell yeah, when you see yourself in your dress blues?......when you graduate, that is awsome, and you get to see the newbies coming in all scared and stuff, and you are ten feet tall, cause, you remember when that was you.....PS, there is no camera in the squak box in the dorm!!!!
