my understanding of a cottage is............
it is a little property that is usually set outside of a local community, in a rural community,
it may be surrounded by water or forest, and it is usually a place to exscape to, when you want to get out of the city and have some time to relax.
all in all it is like a little house that may not have all of the ideal/modern ammenities or services that you would have in a home, or apartment...

It is a cozy little house in the country. It has a white picket fence around it and beautiful flowers growing all in the yard. Roses are climbing on the porch and ivy is climbing up the little house.
