I just read the directions.......what can happen if i don't de-scale the machine?

It is hard-water buildup in the water reservoir and tubing. A cycle done w/ vinegar in the water usually gets it out. (Be sure to do a couple cycles after that of plain water to rinse!)

Scaling is getting rid of mineral deposits left in the machine by your water. The harder your water, the more mineral deposits you'll have. Mineral deposits can eventually clog up your machine. That's why the manufacturer recommends cleaning it with vinegar every so often.

The coffee might go out a dirty or have funny flavours...overall its not very bad, but then the thing might stick to the espresso maker, and you would have funny coffee for a lifetime.
