It's only tacky if you do it tacky. The monarch is the butterfly of August - you might use their colors as your wedding theme. Don't go overboard on the butterflies - use them in moderation. It's rare you see a pack of butterflies in great numbers.... Do just a sprinkle here, a sprinkle there. Don't make it overwhelming. You'll have a theme pulled off perfect. I LOVE butterflies and had a few here and there at my wedding in October. We cut out shapes of butterflies to use for the advice cards in colors of the wedding. Do it with style and you'll be very, very happy!!! Congratulations & good luck!

No I think a butterfly theme wedding is perfect anytime of the year. That is my wedding theme is well and I'm very excited about it. It's lots of fun planning and there is lots of decorations your can get with that theme. Not only that but.......An Indian Legend says that if anyone desires a wish to come true they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since they make no sound, they can't tell the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit. So by making the wish and by releasing the butterfly it will be taken to the heavens and be granted.
So good luck and have fun planning your wedding!!

Not tacky. Just don't go too nuts with it, like plastering a butterfly over everything that is standing still. A few butterfly touches here and there will get your point across, like on your wedding stationary, or on the place cards. I'd skip the butterfly release...sometimes you open it up and they are dead, especially if it's hot. Sad.

I agree that sounds very nice. Here is some information I found on butterflies that may put you at ease.
August's creature of the month is the Monarch Butterfly! August is the best month to see Monarchs in Minnesota. Did you know that this is the only butterfly in North America that actually migrates in the fall to a warmer climate? That's what makes it unique among all the butterflies in Minnesota.

I went to a wedding once where butterflies were released after the celebrant said some sugary words about whispering your innermost secrets to a butterfly, etc. All very sentimental. But some of the butterflies were half dead and flapping around on the ground. Very cruel, I think.

Not at all, butterflies are always a favorite and they are still fluttering around in August just as pretty as ever and besides it's your wedding, if you wanted bluebirds, so be it.

Themes in general tend to be rather tacky. I have yet to see anyone pull one off with class.
That being said, hey, it's your day. Do what you want.
