I am a nutritionist, I suggest you keep a diary of the foods you eat for a week. Write down every thing you eat. Then you can take a look at your eating patterns.
There are 5 steadfast food rules to losing weight and keeping it off, and they have nothing to do with dieting, just watching the foods you put in your mouth.
1) Do not eat anything that has been fried or anything containing high fructose corn syrup or trans fat. Also no prepared meats like balonga, salami, smoked meats, hot dogs, sardines etc. or pickled meats. These contain nitrates.
2) Always eat a low fat high protein breakfast then the other meals in the day should all be smaller and be mostly fruit and vegetables, grains and yogurt and cheese.
3) Do not eat after 5 pm, (unless you work nights that is and have an off schedule/sleep days.)
4) Make sure you get enough fiber in your diet, if you dont eliminate you cant lose the weight.
5) If you have a sweet tooth, try fruit first, if that doesn't work then try to eat just a few bites of something like semi sweet chocolate and kill the sweet tooth with over kill.
If you would like to have me help you work up a diet that works for you, I would be happy to help. You may email me or IM me at indianola_gurl here on yahoo.

If you seriously want to lose weight and be healthy, then forget the idea of "dieting". Diets don't work. Diets imply a short term fix and most people know that most people put the weight back on, if not more, after their diet. The key to weight control is simple: Exercise, portion control, and proper nutrition. It is a lifestyle change that will reap benefits for the rest of your life.
I recommend "Body For Life" by Bill Phillips (there is also a woman's version). In the book, you will read people's inspirational stories and see their dramatic results. The plan is simple. It doesn't require you to cut out foods you need (like carbs, etc.), but focuses on eating smaller, better balanced portions 5-6 times a day. In addition to good nutrition, it helps you develop an exercise plan to build muscle and burn the calories. We aren't talking anything excessive -- you don't need to be a body builder to win at losing weight. Just simple exercises three times a week (dumbells work well) and a desire to have a better, healthier life. I'm a male and followed the book and lost ~ 5 pounds a week, which is great I was building muscle while I was losing fat! It is a great program that will work with you "for life". I felt better, was stronger, and was happier!
Good luck!

I too have been obese all my life. I am just now working on getting healthy.
Because of my busy schedule, I have had tremendous success with Balance For Life (www.balanceforlife.com). Their meals are based on the Zone diet. They're balanced and very tasty. I never go hungry and I get to eat good things. Not only fruits, veggies, lean meats and whole grains, but peanut butter cookies! :-)
I just started the plan last Wednesday and started exercising - I have lost 10 lbs so far!
The key is a balanced diet (so you don't feel deprived) AND exercise.
If you are going to cook for yourself, I would say establish with a nutritionist what your daily caloric intake should be and then cook meals within that realm. Normally it could be 300-400 calories for a meal (bfast, lunch, dinner) and 100-200 calories per snack (2-3 snacks a day).
Try to balance your meals to be 40% protein, 30% carbs, 30% good fat.
Drink lots of water as well. I have found the more water I drink, the more my body craves it. Usually the water craving starts kicking in after about a week. Our bodies are something like 96% water after all right?
Good luck to you!

"Dieting" in general is NOT good for you. Try adding things to your diet that will help you feel full & avoid cravings:
Take a multi-vitamin.
Eat a full serving of whole grains at least 2x daily
Add lemon juice to your water & cayenne to your food.
If you are truly obese it will probably be very difficult for you to jump right in to an exercise regimen. I suggest:
5 minutes of stretching each morning (be sure to concentrate on upper, mid & lower body)
a 20 minute walk each evening after dinner (this will help you avoid snacking, digest dinner & burn calories without risking heart attack)
Curb that sweet tooth:
a couple bites of real dark chocolate preferably organic or a glass of wine 2-3 evenings a week (be careful of the wine if you are any medications)
These are a few easy small steps that will help you start feeling better. Once you have mastered these, you can try more but I think it is important to ake baby steps & have reasonable healthful goals.
