Ok, so I'm about to tackle this crappy addiction, I am very prepared for everything that is thrown at me. I just have one question that I can't find anywhere online and thought an ex-smoker could help. Will I ever feel like a non-smoker mentally? I'm afraid I associatted alot of activities wth smoking and won't enjoy them as an ex-smoker. TRUE??? Besides the obvious things like after eating, phone and driving..I'm talking about things like when ever i did projects around the house I always needed a cig. in my mouth or whenever I went to relax at the pool I'd have a drink and a smoke...things like that...

" Isn't having a smoking section or smoking area
like having a PE-ing section in a swimming pool ??

I just finished reading your question to my now non smoking husband and this is about him. He started smoking at age 15. He joined the US Navy at 17. He married at 26 and we had 4 children together. I begged him to please quit smoking, how can I stress strong enough to these children to not smoke that it was bad for them, when their Daddy was doing it.~~He made attempts to quit but just couldn't. He retired from the Navy and we came back to Texas. At that time the children's first cousin was very ill with lung cancer, he died a horrible death in 6 mos.at the age of 33 leaving a wife and 2 small kiddos, and the Dr's. said it was strictly from smoking. This made a big impression on our children, still my husband could not quit. Then one day while bowling in a smokey bowling alley he had a heart attack.(this man was never sick) He had heart surgery and lay-ed for hours on a cold hard table flat of his back and almost lost his life. He never picked up a cigarette again and he said he never had a desire to. It never bothered him to be around others smoking and it never took away pleasure for him. My husband said that he made up his mind that he wasn't going to smoke anymore and that was the end of the discussion. He is 80 yrs young today and you would never believe it if you would see him.
We want to wish you loads of luck & encouragement~~~~Jill

OK so i gave up smoking 6 months ago... I occasionally have a smoke when i am out drinking, but only one - compared to previously smoking a whole packet whilst out.

When you stop smoking - the smell of a cigarette is disgusting, and really turns you off... you wont want one after not having one for so long.

I feel like a non-smoker now, but occassionally i will get in my car and think 'i want a smoke' although the thought will pass in a second.. its just more of a habbit thing.

You need to get out of the habbit first, then everything else will come... It was really easy for me, i tried a few times to quit and couldnt do it - then without even noticing one day i hadnt had a smoke, so i thought "hey, i havent had one today - i am going to try and quit" and i did :)

Good luck, XO

Those feelings will be very strong for a couple of months even after the craving for the nicotine itself goes away. But, those will disappear in good time. Good luck.

You will. You have to behave and think like a non-smoker. Another good tip is to hang around non-smokers. You will mimick their behavior and it will become second nature to you.
