Haiku might be an interesting and challenging form of poetry to try. Haiku is a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. In fact, USA Today online holds a daily contest. Winners receive various prizes, typically books. This might be a way to challenge yourself and have a little fun. Check it out at: http://www.usatoday.com/life/books/2004-08-03-haiku_x.htm

Have you heard of concrete poetry? It's basically free verse, but the actual poem takes on the shape of a particular object. Send me some of your poems!

Ever have fun with limericks?
A poet once in a rut
Wanted a new form but
How to be cool
And keep with the rule
And still have a poetic gut???
There! An instant limerick composed just for you!

Yeah. Just write. Stream of concious, baby! Go nuts for like two minutes (or more, if you want) -- and just write WHATEVER comes into your brain. Let your mind go. Whatever thoughts pop in there. It's wild. Try it out!
