I need to remove the sights from the dovetails, but can not find any info on how to do this without hurting the barrel of the gun.

I have a scope on my ruger with a see through scope mount. The problem is that I hunt a lot of small game that you catch on the run and really would like to change the factory sights with some fiber optic sights, so I can use the same gun with or without the scope.

im assuming you want to replace them with different sights, if not don't take them off. if your putting a scope on, use see through mounts, and you can still use the iron sights.

i have replaced the front one on my 10/22, and i plan to change the rear soon. it definately sucked. first take the barrel out of the reciever(if you dont know how you prolly shouldn't be taking the sights off). then set it on a hard surface(wood) with a towel under it. find a flat punch and hammer, and start tapping them out. they will be very tight, and take a while to remove. oil might help. just be carefull. most likely you will scratch up the sights, so if you want to keep them, i would wrap a towel around the punch while you are pounding them out. you also might want to have someone hold the barrel while you are removing the sights. you could put it in a vice, but i wouldnt try it cause it might scratch or even bend the barrel. good luck.

Ruger 10 22 Front Sight

You can do it with a punch from the side, but I would suggest you not do it. I have a 10/22 with a 3-12X40mm scope on it and didn't have to take the factory sights off to put the scope on, and I suggest you do the same thing on yours. What if you want to put the sights back on in a few years for whatever reason and have lost them? Easier to just leave them there and mount the scope.

properly the rear sight isn't probable designed to come back off. i've got in no way considered any inventory while i became procuring for mine which you needed it eliminate any attractions. yet once you elect to get it off and could cover the spot up then in simple terms wreck it off. Haha. although, if its the front sight you incredibly must be tough with it. I positioned mine in a vice and used an hammer and a metallic punch. It left some marks yet noting which could no longer be coated up. wish that facilitates.

I would consider another option. Install a bull barrel and aftermarket stock inletted for a bull barrel. That way you don't have rust growing in those exposed dovetails.
The rifle will shoot twice as well and a stock/bull barrel conversion kit only costs around 150.00 if you shop.
Look for the Houge Brand Kit. Comfort, style, precision.
