Would a hand held pipe bomb be considered to be a granade? If not, what is the definition of a grenade? What makes the difference?

It is an IED. It may be considered a grenade if it is to be thrown. A grenade is a term for any small explosive weapon that is thrown or launched in a ballistic tragectory rather than direct line of fire like a bullet or shell. It can be a HAND grenade, a ROCKET PROPELLED grenade, or even a Molotov Cocktail.

Yup could be.. But BATF really wouldnt be concerned over the difference.. at best either is gonna get you 20 years just for possession.
