They are checking for trains. I'm pretty sure it is not over the tracks. I believe it is before the train tracks. It says so on the bus.

I once asked a bus driver this question. His answer paraphrased...

It became a law after an accident in which a school bus was hit by a train. Apparently, the semaphore that is supposed to block the road when a train is coming was not working, and the bus driver did not see the approaching train. There were no survivors.

The law may seem silly, but a law saying that he has to "look both ways" in unenforceable. By requiring an action that can be easily observed by law enforcement, the driver is more likely to comply, and even though you don't actually need to open the door to see an approaching train, this little ritual serves as a reminder to the driver to be cautious when crossing the tracks.

the driver has students on the bus, or ppl in general, what would happen if that bus didnt see a train coming??? they may not hear a train if the bus doors aren't open, and i believe it says something about it in drivers manual..

~*~*~well if the student falls off the bus, then they are screwed, now why would they fall off the bus in the first place??? i mean, most drivers make students stay past a certain line..to prevent these events, and drivers are suppose to slow down when they are dropping students off, or crossing a train track, they have to come to a complete stop..

Haven't you ever noticed that when a bus door opens the flashing lights come on? That way, drivers behind the bus know they are supposed to stop. When they close the door the lights go off.

My wife drives a school bus. They open the door before going over the RR tracks so they can look and listen for a train.

Because once a bus stopped on the tracks instead of before them and then the engine and power died and noone could get out the door cuz of the power and eventually a train hit them!(poor people!)

They open the doors as a safety precaution. If they can't see a train at least with the doors open they can hear the train. What makes no sense is not knowing how to spell sense.

if something happened and the bus got stuck on the tracks you would have an escape route.

It's pretty much common sense - it's one of those safety things they do just in case. I don't know if people have ever been trapped onboard, but I am sure a bus has been hit by a train.

well the reason why they do this is because it is the law. no children will fall out. they do this so they can look out and see. they can't look throw the crap on the door and the pole that is on the door.

it's so funny because i asked the same question to one of my teachers just the other week.
