what kind of retainer?

The reason not to drink. With the hawley, doesn't really matter unless you plan on crunching ice or really hot, you don't want to stress the appliance with hot/cold things. The Essex's will hold drinks, or the sugary remains of them, against the teeth and at the gum line. Not a good idea. As for eating with any retainer, no. They are made to hold your teeth in place or retain them, not to aid in drinking and eating. Use them for the purpose they are made, nothing else. Good luck.

Definitely not necessary, it's really more of a personal choice thing. Before you drink, think if what you're drinking is something you want to taste for awhile after since tastes have a weird effect of lingering on retainers.

No, I do not think it is necessary, but if you feel more comfortable taking it out, go ahead.
