It isn't. God is a construct of the human imagination. The books of laws that have been written (Bible, Koran, etc) were developed to stabilize society and to concentrate the power in the hands of the government and religious authorities. While it (religious writings) served a useful purpose several thousand years ago the human race has outgrown the need for such things.

Obey God to receive all the blessings He wants for you.

Obey your parents and eat your veggies - you'll be healthier for it.

Obey your dad and don't play in the street - he's not trying to be mean and controlling, he just doesn't want you to get hit by a car.

Obey your mom and don't have sex with a boy until he's your husband - she's not mean, she wants for you to have a great, lasting and loving marriage built on trust, and with as little sexual baggage brought in as possible.

Same kinds of things with obeying God. He's the perfect Dad. He gives each of us the perfect opportunities, and keeps us from the things that would bring damage to us.

Imagine what this world would be like if we all obeyed God. No venereal diseases, no drunken driving accidents (kills more people in the US than any war ever does), no abortions, people taking care of their elderly parents, men taking care of their children, men loving their wives.

John Lennon didn't imagine that - he imagined what it would be like if we all denied that God exists.

Because he has a vantage point where he can see our eternal past and future and he knows exactly what we need. He loves us unconditionally and whatever he wants for us is only good things. Everything he tells us to do or not do is for our own good.

He tells us to abstain from sex until marriage so it will be impossible to get an STD or for feelings to get hurt from having sex too early. He told the Jews to circumcise their baby boys on the 8th day because on exactly 8 days after a boy is born he has more Vitamin K than any other time and so he can heal very quickly if it's done on that day. He says eating pork and shellfish are not good because those types of animals carry much toxicity and can cause diseases. He tells us we must forgive because medical doctors agree that when you have unforgiveness it's impossible to get well if you are really sick.
Basically he is like a good father who is always looking out for us. No child likes to have to obey rules but our Heavenly Father loves us very much, more than our biological ones.

Beside that you don't want to go to hell. God gave us rules for reasons. One such rule is to cook your meat thoroughly. Think of how many things you could get sick from eating meat that hasn't been cooked properly. This I believe is in the old testament which gets pretty much ignored, unfortunately. But that is the way you need to look at your question. When you tell a lie, that may not hurt someone at the time but think how many times it's come back around and has end up hurting you or someone else. Stealing, thieves live at the top of the food chain. When you see someone steal, they just raised your price on the item you've bought. I could go on and on, but I hope you've seen the point I'm trying to make. God gave us rules etc.. to help us, not hurt us.

Isn't it obivious? God is our Savior, are Lord, literally our LIFELINE. He created you. Made you. Helps you. Is always there for you. We always ask God for stuff. Help me do this. Help me do that. Guide me this way and get me through this. He gave his only son so that we could be saved. It is by his good grace that the whole world doesn't fall into the pit of hell right now. God has given up everything so that we could have a better life. Shoudln't we repay him by obeying him?

First of all what makes you think that God wants you to obey him, I have been catholic now for over 60 years, and I have no knowledge where God says we have to obey him, I will say to trust in him, and worship him, because he gave you life and free will, you are the one to chose your lifestyle, God has no expectations of you or for anybody for that matter, it is your choice to live a good, honest, and moral life apposed to the opposite, the lifestyle you want is simply your call, may God bless you.

Jesus said if anyone will do His will he will then understand. It's important to obey God because we are finite and cannot understand the whole picture. Most people want to know why before they obey. But faith (and Jesus) said obey and then you will understand. Much as we guide our children and insist they obey us even when they can't understand why.

We are instructed to. That is really the best answer I can give you. Just think, God sacrificed his only son for us. The least we can do is to obey him. He listens to us, so we should listen to him.

Lots of people think that you only need faith, and its true to some extent that we only need faith for salvation. However obedience to God is the way we show that we accept God's gift of salvation. Its not a mere belief in God, as James said in his epistole even the demons believe. What is the difference between demons and christians? That demons believe but don't obey.

James Chapter two
14What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

15If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

19Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

22Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

24Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

25Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
