Deep question! The role consciousness should be playing is linking the things that make sense within us with what is taught about God or the bible etc. (the puzzle). Thus it is that which encourages us to question that which does not seem logical cause religion gives us knowledge but the knowledge is not complete and so we are left with an understanding of what is being said.
But when we follow those "mysterious" questions that arise from the soul (consciousness) and begin our investigation to complete the knowledge, we are then taken to wisdom (the ability to apply knowledge) to an over-standing (which means we conquered that which puzzled of mystified us).
The concept of God however can be mis-interpreted compared to the real thing if this process is not applied.

I believe it is a very important part. I was completely disillusioned with God and religion some time ago. I ran away as fast as I could. I tried so hard, I truly did try, to deny and disbelieve in the existence of God. My soul would not let go. I believe that my soul, or my consciousness, remembers the other side and God before I came here for this lifetime.

Consciousness is a hard word to define, I define it as a mental and spiritual state of being. Normally your consciousness lacks direction, and fans out everywhere without any real goal. Once a goal is set (i.e. God) you aim to bring greater focus to your consciousness. This can be achieved through prayer, chanting, meditation, or some combination, in addition to other practices.
It is believed in some faiths that inherently you are God-conscious (Gaudiya Vaishnavas, for example, hold this to be true), it's just a matter of realizing it for yourself.

Consciousness is the ability we have to determine right from wrong, evil from good (tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil..)
Everyone understands the concept.
People have had it shoved down thier throats for years. The people doing that to people are called hypocrites. They aren't fooling God. :)
Understanding God comes by having a relationship with God, which is only attained through faith and acceptance of his gift of salvation.
Until you let God change your HEART, your MIND will never change it's prefixed belief.
We do not "climb a spiritual ladder" to be with God; he reached down to us, through Jesus. That's the difference between Christianity and every other belief: It changes the heart

It is only in one's consciousness that God can be discovered and understood. God cannot be found in books, buildings or anywhere in the outside world. God is within our consciousness ("the kingdom of God is within") and only through meditation and contemplation within our own temple (consciousness) can we eventually rendezvous with God.

Consciousness is a quality of the mind generally regarded to comprise qualities such as subjectivity, self-awareness, sentience, sapience, and the ability to perceive the relationship between oneself and one's environment. It is a subject of much research in philosophy of mind, psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science. God is omnipresent. He is everywhere and knows everything. So is God Conscious of everything. I believe He is.

It is EVERYTHING! Reality is based on subjective perspective, so your conciousness is all you have to experience the universe/reality. You could even say that conciousness is the scientific name for your soul!
