You probably mean "inverter". An inverter takes a DC voltage and creates an AC voltage with it. In my particular line of work, for example, it's useful to be able to convert 48VDC to 120VAC.

The opposite of an inverter is a "rectifier".

It is a device that takes DC and turns it into AC. This is often done to allow you to run a household electrical device from a 12V car battery.
