During the revolution, there was a battle at Montreal, but the Americans lost.

During the War of 1812, there was a big naval battle on the great lakes. "Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead" and all that. The Battle of Lake Erie is its name. It was a great American victory. The British were force to withdraw from Detroit as a result. I guess that could be considered securing the northern border.

The present border originated with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the war between Great Britain and the separating colonies which would form the United States.

In my opinion we did not secure the Northern border in a battle. In fact the invasion of Canada was a disaster, we did manage to burn the Canadian capital but in response we had our own burned. Montreal might be the name of the battle, but I am also at a lossed at what that battle might be. Sorry, I do not specialize in our early History and my classes in U.S. History was a joke.
