As of Tuesday, 1/23/07, you will need a passport to return to the US by air from Canada or Mexico, period. And since it can take up to 8 weeks to get one, you had better apply tomorrow if you are planning to fly back.

You still need a passport. Any plane travel to Mexico, Central, and South America, regardless of whether or not the flight is roundtrip, now requires a passport. This passport law doesn't come into effect for drivers until later this year or early next I believe. If you don't want to have to get a passport then you're going to have to drive to Mexico as well as drive back. If you still want to fly there then a passport will be necessary, and if you apply now it's not too late to get one. You might have to pay a bit extra to have the process expedited however.

Interesting question. Are you saying you're flying down from the US and driving back? Odd. Technically I don't think you need the passport to drive back over the border, but the airline may require you to have one for the outgoing flight.
