Legend tells us that St. Peter was crucified upside down, as he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner that Christ died (upright).
A St. Peter's Cross is an inverted Latin cross and has been the symbol of the Popes ever since.
With love in Christ.

The word catholic means universal gospel. Peter led the Christian Church Acts 2. Jesus called him the devil for trying to stop His Crucifixion as the propitiation for sin. Matthew Chapters 27-28. Peter was chided after the Resurrection for his racist attitudes in Acts 10:1-22 and 17:26 from Saul Pauluus to the Gentiles and Acts 21:37-39. Like all Christians both Peter and Paul had to grow through experience and grace!
Dan C is correct the Catholic Church was started by Emperor Constantine as the acceptable religion to unify the Roman Empire.

First, the idea that Peter started the Catholic Church is only supported by Catholic Church tradition. The evidence in the Bible is somewhat contestable.
He was a martyr. He was crucified and opted to be crucified upside-down because he thought that he was not worthy to be crucified in the same manner as Christ.
He was a hero of the Christian Church.

Peter was martyred, supposedly on the same day as Paul. He was crucified on a cross, and allegedly asked to be crucifed upside down, as he said he was not worthy to die the same way Jesus did.
