license plate laws range from state to state.

Example: Kentucky the plate stays with the car even as the owners change of the car. Where Ohio each owner has to buy a tag for that car and can transfer the tag from car to car they own.

all depends on how the state laws are set up.

I don't completely understand your question, but if its why does the dealer remove the used licence plate once they own the traded used vehicle, its because the tag in in the last owner name, not dealers name. They will put on a dealer owned tag to take you for a test drive. In Some states you can transfer your old tag to a new vehicle and save moneys on buying a new tag.

I've always heard because its in someone elses name, you don't want the cops to pull you over and run your license plate number and its not in your name, you can go to jail for a while for that.
