It usually takes 10 days from the time of the bite to show symptoms.

Symptoms could be the classic "old yeller", foaming at the mouth, stupor and aggression, but most commonly its the "dumb" rabies, they act like they are perminentlly drunk, hide from everybody/everything, abnormal behavior that the pet wouldn't normally display as far as neurologically.
.

Look for swelling, fever and any changes in gait or temperment. Usually the closer the bite it to the head the quicker the symptoms appear. This is because the rabies virus has a destination planned.... the brain. It easily infects the salivary glands, usually death ensues not too long after. (thats why rabid animals salivate, their salivary glands are inflamed so much, they can't swallow, so the saliva goes the only way it can, out the mouth).

Your best bet is to take him to the vet ASAP. Its probably wise to keep him isolated for atleast 10 days, most dogs by day 8 show symptoms or die. Remember the virus is heavly consitrated in the saliva, so its important to wash your hands if you mess your dog, and avoid other animals from comming with in close prox. to him.

Funny note, as lethal as rabies it, its very fragile when exposed to the atmosphere, and soap (regular soap) will kill the virus upon contact..... of course you'd have to be super quick, but that is why they always tell people if they have been bitten to always wash the site with soap as soon as possible. Interesting....

The only 100% acurate test to determine rabies is to test the brain. It has to be removed and a FAVIN is done. Sadly your pet will have to be killed for this test, so the best bet is the 10 day isolation and talking with your vet. Keep your vet updated to his symptoms and how he's acting. After 10 days and your pup is still standing take him to the vet so he can do a more thorough exam to make sure he is in good health.

Was your dog vaccinated for rabies before? Usually your pet has a good chance of survival if he's been vaccinated anually for rabies. You need to take your pet to the vet, although it may be a bit late for any proactive remidy, there is no cure for rabies, but they can try a rabies profilaxis (revaccination) to help prevent.

Check out these sites... I think these sites will help you alot more that I can, and give you helpful information to really understand this virus.

If the dog has had a rabies vaccine and has contact with a wild animal, it should get a rabies booster ASAP. If the dog was not vaccinated, in most states, it cannot be vaccinated for the first time following an attack/contact.
The question is, is the dog current on it's vaccination?????

Foaming at the mouth is not a sign that all animals with rabies have. Some will have neurological symptoms, some will just appear ill. Many have temperment changes.

You should call your vet or the local health department. This is not something to be messing with, since it is 100% fatal once symptoms have started!!!!!!

We saw a cat attacked by an unknown animal in July. At the end of August, we saw the cat again for extremely "odd" behavior. The cat got much worse overnight and bit a doctor. He was euthanized the next day and sent for rabies testing, which was positive. So, in his case, it took about a month. It can take longer. You really should see your vet. If your dog is not vaccinated, he should be quareninted by your vet. If he was attacked by a rabied animal and contracted the virus, there is nothing you can do. You may have to make a hard decision.
I hope a pray that it is not the case.
Other early signs:
reclusivness, fear of dark, fear of water, neurological signs of any kind, mutilation of the origial bite wound site, enability to swollow, and others.

I use my very sad "Whitey, the cat with rabies" story everytime I hear someone say that rabies vaccine is not important. This was one of the worst and sadest cases I have ever been involved in. A $5 shot would have saved this cats life. Instead, they had a slew of vet bills and not the mention the cost of every family member having to go through the post exposure vaccine series. A $5 shot would have prevented all of this.
By the way, he was an indoor-only cat who was attacked while out on a 3rd story apartment balcony. Hmmm!

If your dog is current on his rabies vacciantion you don't need to be concerned..simply take him to the vet to have any wounds cleaned and treated.

Also it can take months for the signs of rabies to appear. This is why unvaccianted dogs are usually quarantined for 6 months. There is NO test that can be conducted on a live animal that will tell you if it has rabies or not...all tests must be done after the animal is dead.

The 10 day quarantine is for dogs that have been vaccinated and bit someone or attacked another animal. It's 6 months for an unvaccianted dog.
*****distemper is NOT dangerous to humans nor does it cause a dog to act in an aggressive manner. It has NOTHING to do with temper what so ever.***********

Well you might want to see at vet first of all. I think that some other signs are if a dog just starts to bark all the time for no reason. I remember reading something about rabies a long time ago in my reading class at school bad sadly I don't remember too much.

Rabies takes 10-14 days to develope. It really depends on what attacked him but the chances of your dog having rabies is pretty slim. He probably is hurt and has wounds or abcesses that make him feel bad and not want to eat. If continues take your dog to your vet for a professional opinion

It can take up to 6 months for signs of rabies to show up. Like others have said, once an animal is showing symptoms, it's too late. You need to take your dog to the vet to have the wound(s) examined and cleaned. Tell the vet your concern about rabies. He/she will probably put your dog on antibiotics for the wound and give him a rabies vaccination.

The only way to conclusively check for rabies is to test the animal that bit him.

they need to test brain tissue to do that, so you need to have the animal dead. Your best bet is to kill it and call the DEP, because rabies can be transferred through a drop of saliva into an open wound or through a mucous membrane.

You still might be able to get him a series of shots - in either case, he should be observed by a proffessional for a few days. It can take between a few days and a few weeks - but it will be a sudden onset.
Call your local health department extension or your local dept of argriculture, or.... you vet
Good Luck. I'll cross my fingers for you and your poochie.
