At my age I don't have to worry about any draft affecting me. I did however volunteer to serve in the military when I came of age and I remained in for 6 years. I would be willing to fight and to die for my country and my family. Would I have fought in Viet Nam.....no. Our country was not in danger in any way in that conflict. Would I have fought in Iraq.....you bet. We were attacked on 9-11 by terrorists and I feel that any country who ally's themself with terrorists is just as responsible as those who actually committed the crime. If we don't take care of this problem now we will have more terrorists attacks in this country. Only a fool would think that terrorism will stop because we leave Iraq. So I would gladly fight and die in another country in order to keep my family safe and away from war. Common sense should tell us that in any country where a war is fought that the death rate is astronomical and most of those casualities ae non-combatants. Tell me if you will......what soldiers died in the twin towers on 9-11. Those were all non-combatants. Only a coward will run and not fight for his family.

i signed up voluntarily so it really won't apply to me. and i think that in a REAL time of need, americans should answer when called upon. it's an unspoken agreement, if you live in the u.s. and you're called on in a draft, then you must go. don't like it? tough. complain about it in jail after you go awall. this country may have it's ups and downs, but i personally think it's worth fighting for and would do so w/o hesitation. if i have enough guts to do this, i'm sure everyone else can commit too.

I am 56 yrs old. In January, 1969 I was 18 and faced with this exact dilemma. The war in Viet Nam was about as hot as it ever got and it was a year after the Tet Offensive of 1968. I knew of men that had run away to Canada, and I knew of men that had burned their draft cards, and similar things like that were a part of everyday life. Along with the war on TV and friends and family of mine that were getting maimed and killed over there in that war. To simplify what I was thinking at that time is to say that I would have fought anyone at any time that was attacking my country and I would have gladly given my life to do it. But I could not justify going to Viet Nam. I could not justify running away from my country either. So what to do? I joined the NY Army National Guard. By doing that I was in a position to defend my country at any time. That first 6 yr commitment turned into 26 year career that took me from a private to captain at retirement, and took me from the Guard to the Army Reserve.
The situation now - 40 yrs later - is a bit different. The people we are in a war with are the people that attacked our country on 9/11, aka the War on Terror. Would I go to fight this war over there, yes. They brought it here to us and since we've been fighting them on their ground there hasn't been another attack on our soil. In other words to keep my country free and to keep Americans safe in their homes I would go where ever I was told to go and fight whomever I had to fight to keep them away from our shores. And yes, I would give my life in defense of this nation.
Freedom isn't free. We hear this a lot and I hope the meaning doesn't wear off of it. Freedom truly is not free. American men and women have been paying for our freedom since the very beginning of our democracy. And they are still paying for it today and will continue to pay for it. They've paid in pain, sacrifice, blood, and death.
Do I like the war. Absolutely not. War is the worst of what man does to himself. Do I understand the need for it. Absolutely yes.
Well I rambled some and I hope you'll pardon me for that. I also hope this has answered your questions.

I'm against the war completely. It's an unwinnable event of violence. I don't believe I would go. I love america and am glad to be an american, but I would come up with an different approach to our global issues.

Having already spent some time in Iraq i would have to say...... I would most definitely re-enlist b4 they even drafted me.. (which they wouldn't). I stand behind my country no matter who the current president is!! this is my country so therefor this is my president. i believe that we need more in the military because we definitely are on the brink of ww3 and we ain't got enough to survive!!!

I won't worry I already did my time and than some.
If there was a role I could fill I would go.
I don't know if Marines would want an experienced combat train corpsman around.

there is already draft papers in congress and all, anyone from 18 to 42, female and male can be drafted for any branch of the military, home land security, fema or (quote) " any reason they see fit ".
if they announce a draft of such magnitude I do believe the masses will rise up against it. So there will be no reason to run. There are more of us then there are total military men in all branches combined.....remember that. Power lies in numbers.

i would volunteer and gladly too, to defend myself, my family, and my country. yeah, that even inculdes you losers who would run. however i don't think we should ever have the draft because what makes the u.s. military so great is that its is 100% volunteer and everyone who is in it did it by choice and is fighting because of personal motivations
