Sputnik was the first satellite, but I don't know what purpose it served other than being a milestone.

Obviously the Russians are credited for getting the first functional Satelites in Space. Would the Sputnik satelites be considered spy satelites? The technology we have today was no where near what they had then and the advanced picturing of the earth's surface did not come until later.

the first known spy satellite was code name "Corona" in use 1959 to 1972 by the USA

sputnick was only a radio becon at 20.005 MHz and 40.002 MHz that emmitted a tone
and the battery lasted only 22 days and fell from orbit after 3 months
