It all starts when they are kittens if you spend a lot of attention on them they make wonderful pets.

-Cats will not learn anything unless they want to.
-Cats will do whatever they want , unless restrained by a much larger and more powerful being, like a human (who has a high tolerance for pain) .
How old is the cat and how long have the 2 been together?
A younger cat is full of piss and vinegar. This "fighting" is most probably his/her play. Pet until the cat starts to "fight", stop and say"harshly" NO. It may work , in time, or it may not. Remember, it depends on what the cat wants to do. Regardless, enjoy the time when the cat WILL let you love on him/her.
We have 3 cats. The 1st was a stray (adult) that we adopted . She became Queen of all that she could see, should see and might see. The second was a kitten that the Ol' Lady and our kid picked out. Brought her home and the 1st started peeing on the carpet and acting like we had peed in her food dish. Acted like the kitten was going to take her throne. She was not going without a fight. They eventually became friends and the DIVA will even condescend to play with the 2nd.
The newest is an abandoned kitten (now 4 1/2 months) that I rescued by the road about 2 months ago.
The middle 2 are best of friends (number 2 is not much more than 2 yrs old) play from 1 end of the house to the other, eat together while the DIVA still has a big problem with number3, even going out of her way to swat #3.
I have noticed the last few days though that the Diva is gradually becoming more accepting of the newest.
Cats are a trip. Be patient and loving and it should work out ( if the cats want it to).

Don't pet the cat unless it wants to be petted--I don't think you can change this. As for the fighting, everytime the cat starts picking a fight (or clawing the couch or anything else you don't want it to do), discipline it. Find something the cat doesn't like and do that to it everytime it acts badly. (I've found that a squirt gun works well on most cats...eventually they stop doing what gets them squirted. Also violently shaking a soda can full of pennies works too, but the squirt gun works better.) This worked for me when my sister moved in with her cat (and didn't get along with my cat).

Keep trying to pet/pick up the cat. I have 2 cats and the little one does not like alot of attention either but I still try to pick him up and pet him for as long as he will let me. You should find that he/she will start showing you affection in their own way, every morning mine has to see me in the morning now after the alarm goes off and has to sleep between my legs at night.

I used to have the meanest cat alive. He would literally attack some people who came to the house. He never once went at me though. It turned out he just was not meant to be an indoor cat. We eventually gave him away to someone where he could be outside, and they told me he turned into the nicest cat!

Sit with it a long time try t feed it from your hand. It will like you more if it associates you with something good such as food sowhen you feed it stand there with it while it eats pet it and talk to it, this meathod needs repitition so don't be discouraged if it dosen't work right away it will eventually.

Talk to it everyonce and a while. Tell him that hes safe with you and you love him. It could have been abused as a kitten or something. Just make it feel at home and dont just stop petting it but dont force it on him though.
Hope I could help

Treat it as kindly as you can. It will reflect the atmosphere it is given. If those traits are too ingrained though, that may be the way the Cat is forever. You can't really train cats.
